My shooting partner @clark_murphy264 running Stage 16 at the Laramie NRL Hunter match earlier this season. 2 turkey targets at about 526 and 515 yards from 2 positions.

This clip is from the largest, fastest growing, and most popular find, range, and engage style long range shooting competition called NRL Hunter. We shoot in the teams division where we have 6 minutes to find our targets, range them, and engage them. Stages can be set up in three different configurations: 1 Target from 4 positions, 2 targets from 2 positions, and 4 targets from 1 position. A first round impact is 2 points and you move to the next target/position. If you miss, you can take a follow up shot worth one point. Either way you move to the next target or position after that shot. Max of 8 points on a stage for individuals and 16 for teams (both have to shoot).

The Buffalo Bills Revenge match near Laramie, WY hosted by @longrangefossen was my favorite match last season. The terrain is incredible with lots of cool natural props to shoot from, tricky winds, and a really fun course of fire (usually has amazing food too). We’ll definitely be shooting it in the 2027 season.

If you want to try out the sport, go to NRLHunter[dot]org and view the 2-day Hunter schedule and the 1-day Games (basically the same, but single day more relaxed matches) matches. Games matches are added all the time, so keep an eye out. It’s the most fun you’ll ever have with a rifle.

~10” square at ~526yds off a tripod.

@clark_murphy264 and I have improved in a lot of ways since the Price @nrlhunter match back in June. We still need to work on our tripod shooting though. It’s a big focus of our training during the off-season.

Best change I made following this match was going suppressed with a @tbac_suppressors Magnus-S-RR. I do not miss the concussion of a brake.

Can’t wait for next season. Schedule is coming out soon! In the meantime, get signed up for our 1-day NRL Hunter Games match at @cameoshootingcpw on November 28th. Only a few spots left!

I really didn’t want to post this stage. It was a train wreck. But I figured letting you guys see my brain fall out during a stage might be helpful so you can avoid the mistakes I made.

First, it’s obvious that @clark_murphy264 and I need to get better off a tripod — both managing all the gear and building more stable positions. One of the biggest things we’re focusing on during the off-season is practicing tripod shooting.

Second, if you’re shooting in a dusty match, take all the rounds out of your mag and make sure it’s in good working order between stages. This stage was near the end of day 2 for us and everything was dusty and stopped working correctly. Unfortunately mag problems turn me into Joe Biden and I forget where I am, what I’m doing, and how things work.

The Grand Slam and the Paloma Challenge @nrlhunter match just before it really tested our skills and showed us a lot of our weaknesses. Gotta remain humble and willing to learn.

I can’t wait for next @nrlhunter season! Schedule will be out soon! In the meantime, I’ll keep posting stages from last season.

This was a fun stage (15) from the Grand Slam season finale match in Clovis, NM. A ram a bit past 700 yards from 4 positions.

@clark_murphy264 and I are still deciding on our gear and setup for next season. A few things are settled though:
• 6.5 creedmoor → .25 WAP trying something new with @west_elk_precision
• @pure_precision_rifles SKLTN actions
• @tbac_suppressors Magnus-S-RR suppressors with @recoilxbrakes brakes
• @mdttac21 Ckye-pod Triple Pull Bipods
• @armageddongear Game changer shooting bags - Schmedium with heavy fill
• @shooters_global SG Pulse Pro Levels
• @eberlestock’s new Prowl packs
• @tensecondprecision data sleeves
• Short Bus Precision Talking Timers

The rest is still TBD.
Testing out some new LRFs, tripods, barrels, scopes, and chassis. We’ll see!

Stage 1 of the @thepalomachallenge NRL Hunter match in NM ran by @followthroughbuck back in July.

It was a fun but very difficult match mainly due to a combination of targets against backdrops that made it difficult to spot misses and a lot of triple-pull or standing tripod stages. While we did alright on this stage, the match made it very evident to @clark_murphy264 and me that we needed to practice tripod shooting a lot more.

We’ve had a bit of downtime since the @nrlhunter Grand Slam match and now we’re itching to get back out there. Still working out the setup we’re going to run for next season. Excited for a few of the changes!

I’m pretty proud of how we handled this stage at the @nrlhunter Grand Slam season finale match.

The stage had four little raven targets between 300-350 yards with a fair amount of wind. It took us a bit to spot all four. We didn’t even get on the rifle until we were 2m30s in. But we stayed composed, spotted our misses, made good corrections and didn’t get rattled when time was running out. Is there room for improvement? Definitely. But not bad overall.

@clark_murphy264 and I can’t wait for next season!

If you’re not too far from western CO (Grand Junction), come out to the 1-day match at @cameoshootingcpw the last Saturday of November! Go to NRLHunter[dot]org and click the Games schedule for details.

Fun stage from the @nrlhunter Grand Slam 2026 finale match. We had to find a bobcat and engage it from 4 positions. Ended up finding it at about 620 yards.

This stage was a nice reprieve from some of the other stages. The target was pretty easy to find, the positions were simple and there wasn’t much wind. Was nice to stack up some points on this one. Most of the stages at the match were far less forgiving.

@clark_murphy264 and I #started recording these videos for ourselves and they started taking off on social. We like doing them because we learn a lot watching ourselves. I notice mistakes I make in every video I post. Hopefully sharing our competition journey on here helps you and perhaps inspires some of you to try out the sport.

By the way, the talking timers we designed (on my hat and Clark’s muffs) are now for sale! We tested and improved on them over the course of the season. Check out ShortBusPrecision.com (link in bio) to see how they work.

The Short Bus Precision Talking Timer is finally here!

I created this because I wanted something smaller, louder, and simpler to use than the Sper ones so many of us have been using in @nrlhunter

I purposefully made this as simple as possible. Turn it on and it remembers whatever time you last set it to. Press the main button and it starts the countdown timer. It announces the time it starts at. When the timer is stopped, ends, or is turned off/on, it goes back to whatever time you last set it at. Basically, you should never have to change the time setting on it during a match.

It announces the time at every minute interval between 1 minute and 10 minutes. When under a minute it announces every 10 seconds. Then it counts down every second from 5 seconds.

You can get either a flat back (good for putting velcro on), a hat clip back, and a molle/strap clamp back (flat back + clamp).

Recharges via USB-C. @clark_murphy264 and I RO’d Price and used it non-stop for 2 days for every shooter without running out of battery.

I am providing the CAD files (via OnShape) if you guys want to create and print your own housings/accessories for it. It’s easily disassembled if you want to paint it or whatever else.

Clark and I used it all season. Check my shooting reels and you’ll see various prototype versions across the season.(Clark’s velroed to his muffs and hat clip for mine).

Full stage run from the @nrl_hornady_hunter_challenge @nrlhunter match in Price, UT earlier this summer.

It’s fun going back and editing videos from earlier in the season and seeing how we improved as the season progressed. One of the biggest changes we made after this match was our wind-call communication. We’d often say things like “favor right” or “hold on the chest.” @velayo_0317 suggested calling our actual hold in mils instead. It’s less subjective, forces you to pay attention to what you’re actually holding, and makes corrections after a miss more precise. That was a great change for @clark_murphy264 and I.

I also made a rifle setup change after this match that I regret.

Until this point I hadn’t changed anything with my equipment since I started competitive shooting in late summer 2024. I was really happy with my @xlrindustries Envy Pro, but I wanted to run suppressed and couldn’t make weight with a can. Instead of making a few minor changes, I switched to a Foundation Ezekiel, which freed up enough weight for a suppressor and @mdttac21 ckyepod triple-pull bipod.

I shot the final three matches of the season with it and really wanted to love it, but I missed my Envy almost immediately. I really hesitate mentioning this because I really like Foundation as a company and what they stand for, but the amount of fore-end flex (particularly torsionally) really disappointed me. It felt like it was spring loaded when shooting off a bipod or tripod if I put even the slightest amount of force into the buttstock. I just wasn’t used to that coming from a chassis.

One change I definitely don’t regret: going suppressed. The @tbac_suppressors Magnus-S-RR with @recoilxbrakes brake has been phenomenal. Not taking the concussion from a brake over an entire match makes a huge difference.

After talking with @jaden_1_2 at @west_elk_precision , it looks like we have a way to get back into an Envy Pro next season without going to a carbon barrel or giving up my can and bipod.

Excited to get it built!
