Comment SHADES if you're tired of networking through a screen.

Face to face beats the internet every time. Phone numbers, emails, Instagrams, real connections with other artists and producers who are chasing the same placements you are.

That's what a day at @shadesofsync in Atlanta/Alpharetta looks like.

For years I told myself I was being strategic.

I was researching. Studying. Waiting until I felt good about the music before I pitched.

Then I looked back at a whole quarter and realized I had sent maybe 15 emails. I wasn't being strategic. I was hiding.

The year I actually broke through in sync was the year I stopped treating every submission like a big deal. I started treating it like a workout. Reps. Volume. Keep moving.

I wasn't more talented that year. I was just faster.

Swipe through if you think you're stuck. You probably aren't.

Eleven women got a producer credit on the biggest songs of last year. Eleven. Out of all of them.

That is 4.4% of producers. And that number has barely moved in over a decade. It sat around the same spot in 2012.

Songwriters got worse. Women went from 18.9% to 14.5% in a single year. That is going backward.

Here is what those numbers actually feel like if you are living them. You walk into a room and you count. Every panel, every session, every studio. You already know the answer before you sit down.

And it compounds, because access in this business moves through rooms. Briefs get passed. Referrals happen between people who already know each other. If you were never in the room, you were never in the pipeline.

Shades of Sync was built with that in mind on purpose. Women producers, artists, and songwriters are not a side conversation here. Same room, same access, same table.

So if you have been waiting for somebody to ask you to come. This is the ask.

Two days. One online, one in Atlanta.

Comment SHADES if you want in this year.

Fantastic. Phenomenal. Already asking about next year. That's the reaction when music creators finally get in a room with the people who actually place music.

@shadesofsync happens once a year. If you've been watching from the outside, this is your sign.

I had three pitches in motion at once. One never replied. One ghosted me after a 30 minute call. One signed me to a deal that’s still paying out years later.

I had no way of knowing in advance which one was going to land. None of us do.

What I figured out is the more pitches I had moving at the same time, the less any single one mattered. The pressure on each conversation went down. The math started doing the work for me.

When I was sending one or two emails a week I was treating every pitch like it was the last shot I was ever going to get. Of course nothing was hitting. I was strangling the process.

The slides break down the actual pace I had to commit to before things started clicking.

Most people who quit sync were good enough to make it.

That is what gets me. It is almost never talent. It is the silence.

You send the track. Nothing comes back. No no, no reason, no closure. And you are supposed to do it again next week like that did not happen.

The hard part is you cannot tell if you are close. In most work you can see yourself getting somewhere. In sync you can be one email away from a placement and it looks exactly the same as being nowhere at all.

Then you open your phone and everybody else is announcing something. You do not see the two years of nothing that came before their post. So you measure your inside against their outside and come up short every time.

That is usually when the work starts feeling like a chore. The thing you loved becomes the thing you owe. And that is the last step before somebody walks away for good.

What helps is not a pep talk from people outside this business. It is being around creators in the same fight who can tell you the silence is normal and you are not behind.

We are talking about this in Atlanta. Out loud.

Comment SHADES if you want to grow your network in a room full of brilliant people.

Her takeaway from @shadesofsync in Atlanta: the connections. A room full of people doing amazing things in sync, all in one place for a day.

You can't build that from your DMs. You have to be in the room.

Two years into my own sync career I still hadn't figured this part out.

I thought a signing was the win. I'd land one, post about it, then go right back to cold pitching the same way I had been before.

What I missed is that one yes can quietly open doors I never would have walked up to on my own. Affiliate libraries the publisher works with. Briefs that never go public. Producers I get introduced to at the next stage of someone else's deal.

None of that shows up the day you sign. It shows up six months later, or a year later, when you realize half your brief flow is coming through a relationship that started with one email.

I almost missed all of it the first time because I was treating each signing like the finish line.

The placement is the part everybody talks about. It is not the part that decides whether you are still doing this in ten years.

Nobody warns you about the waiting. The pitch that goes out and never comes back. The no with no explanation attached. That cost is quiet and it is constant, and plenty of talented creators quit around year three because of it.

Nobody warns you about the money either. Sync income comes in waves. Most people spend it like the wave is permanent. Then it goes quiet for eight months and the panic sets in.

And almost nobody has decided who gets their catalog when they are gone. That music can keep paying long after you stop working. Somebody should know where it goes.

That is what we are getting into this year. Mental health in this business. What to do with the money once it hits. Building something that outlives the next placement.

Comment SHADES if you've ever wondered whether to keep going.

Her biggest takeaway from @shadesofsync in Atlanta wasn't a tactic. It was hearing music supervisors say it out loud: don't give up. When you're deep in the music it's easy to get lost in it and wonder what you're even doing. A room full of people telling you to keep going changes that.

Then the plan: keep making great music, package it right, and keep doing the outreach.

He showed up at 60.

Not to test the waters. To actually do the work.

12 weeks later he had a full album deal, weekly briefs from a library, and a spot on a composer roster for a reality TV company.

That is not luck. That is what happens when you stop waiting for the right moment and just start.

Your age is not the thing holding you back. Your hesitation is.

TV still needs music. Films still need scores. Commercials still need soundtracks. None of that asks how old you are before it pays.

This weekend, open your DAW. Write one track with sync in mind. Just one. That is the first brick in a catalog that could pay you for years.

Comment SHADES if you're a woman building a career in sync.

We have a space in sync. We have a space in music. And we have a voice. Her message to every woman trying to get in: be fearless, and if there isn't a space for you yet, make one.

@shadesofsync is built for exactly that. A room in Atlanta where the sky is the limit.
