16-35 spells Context. If there’s a word that’s been beaten into me over the last five years, it’s context. Not many lenses have the versatility of getting you up close and personal with subjects, yet at the same time opens up enough to really express the environments you are in. While I’ve personally struggled with this lens for years - I’ve owned 4 copies of it, in both EF and RF expressions; it’s a lens I’ve come around to leaning on in the last year or so. taken in Whistler Blackcomb by @clinttrahan

Glass is king. I’ve long thought about a series of posts focusing on one lens type for each. Starting with fisheye, then to wides, primes, and zooms. Revelling a little personal thoughts and opinions on each.

To be honest, I’ve never been a huge fisheye fan; they are easy to over use, but they have their place. Having said that, I’ve always owned one and rarely take it out of the bag; when you need one, it really does the job like no other lens out there. It is probably the most complicated relationship I have with any piece of kit; I don’t love it, but it’s always with me…

Rotorua never fails to deliver the goods. A staple on the Crankworx World Tour since 2015, and historically the season opener, 2025 brought us all together once again. Crankworx Whistler turns 20 this year…just insane. I ventured into Whistler in 2011, not even a photographer yet, and fell in love. First with the sport, and then the community. Whistler is the Heart of Crankworx. It’s a beast. It’s a challenge, it’s the best damn week (plus) you can spend in the mountain bike world. It’s an annual family reunion where we gather, compete, edit, party, celebrate.

We’ve lost some great ones over the years, but their spirits live on. You can feel their presence in the start gates, the finish corrals, the camaraderie. They may be gone, but never forgotten.

Crankworx, happy anniversary. Darren. Jimmy. Steve. Chris. Every single person that’s worked any of these events. The volunteers, parents, and of course, parents who support the dreams of your sons and daughters. Thank you. Grassroot events are the bedrock of any discipline. A place, a moment in time, where we gather, test our minds and bodies. Celebrate community and have a good time. After the clean up, we’ve moved on to the next; but the memories remain.

Thank you…mountain biking has changed my life, and it isn’t the riding. It is the people. This community is unlike anything I’ve experienced in any other aspect of my life. There is competition for sure; but there is a true sense of community, compassion, empathy.

I’ve seen riders cheering harder for their competitors to throw down a good run. I’ve seen Moms and Dads cheering on other parents kids. Rival factory team mechanics working to get athletes repaired before a race run.

In a world going crazier by the moment, mountain biking, remains that little part of the world where things are (mostly) good and pure.

Thank you, Moms, Dads, mechanics, volunteers, patrol, ER attendants, friends, everyone running events. (Very few people understand the amount of work that goes into events behind the scenes. Thank you for the platform you give the Mountain Bike Community; it may feel thankless at times; but we appreciate it.).
