I am delighted to announce the completion of 10 fantastic years with the very remarkable and utterly awesome Mrs Elisabeth Wilkinson. I have applied for and been accepted for a further indefinite stint as her doting husband. We are in Seville, heading to Morocco which was the enchanting destination of our honeymoon a decade ago. The Alhambra - two posts as it is so remarkable. The Alhambra was home to the last muslim emirate in Europe. Muhammad V signed the treaty of surrender to the armies of Ferdinand and Isabella in 1492 and vacated this magisterial castle and palace on a hill in Granada. The Nasrid Palaces are the apogee of islamic architecture and design, embellished over a period of 700 years, but mostly after the fall of Cordoba in 1236. The Mosque Cathedral of Cordoba is one of the most amazing places in the world. Built between 760 and 990 by the Caliphate of Cordoba it is the 2nd largest mosque in the world. The Moors were pushed out by the Christian forces in 1236 and the mosque eventually repurposed for a cathedral in 1530s. by @clivewilkinson

My brilliantly talented pal Lorcan O’Herlihy passed yesterday. A great loss to the world.

I got to know Lorcan when we both served on the AIA/Los Angeles Board around 2005. We both pushed for free advertising for staff so that more people could connect through the AIA channel and make it a social hub.

We both told the other that they were shooting ahead and going further, but I was proved right. Since founding his excellent firm LOHA, Lorcan has progressively built a body of work that truly shines. It has brought a profound sense of grace to the social space of housing, both individual and multi-family, but especially to the latter. The buildings are all exemplars of his honest constructive style – you know a Lorcan building when you see it. He believed in the community building work that these well-grounded, elegant, engaging and commercially viable projects provided. They provided a convincing validation of high quality architecture in small and medium scale commercial work so important in making cities for people.

We shared stories over lunch frequently, and I learned from him as a vital colleague and friend. We both shared connections across the pond including studying at the AA in London. I know I join the whole LA architectural community in mourning his profound loss. Lorcan’s illness has been so terribly hard on both his family and his firm – I hope that this closure now offers the space to heal and restore.

Three consecutive days of Richard Rogers: Part 2

1 - 15. Day three presented an illuminating tour of the truly spectacular interiors of Richard and Ruthie’s home in Chelsea. Carved from two Regency townhouses, a surprisingly modest entrance leads to a twisting glass and metal space, that climbs up to the generous two-story ‘piazza’ living area. The modern intervention in a classic structure forms a perfect setting for the many gracious social events that the Rogers’ regularly convened. The vibrant and colorful spirit of Richard and Ruthie is pervasive throughout – again with many large and small artisan inventions.
