Crazy time to be alive… to see America turn 250. I decided to write and post it early so maybe more FAST Marines would see it before we put our phones down over the celebratory weekend. First thing that came to mind when I sat down to write it, was being in Timor-Leste with Bravo 1 back in 2012–13. A tiny island nation off the coast of Indonesia. They fought hard for their independence in the late ’90s. On libo, we ended up playing a pickup game of soccer with some local kids on a cracked concrete slab next to the bar where we were drinking. (No greater friend, no worse enemy… am I right?) They were happy. Genuinely happy. Grateful just to be there. You could see it in their eyes. The goals were nothing more than two old pillars from a building that used to stand there. The soccer ball was held together with duct tape. Some of the kids didn’t have shoes. Others wore jerseys from teams that had lost the Super Bowl a decade earlier after they’d been donated overseas. FAST guys know this feeling all too well. We’ve seen some truly poor and underprivileged places. Looking at it through our eyes, those kids had every reason not to be happy. Yet they were. They were grateful. It’s my personal belief that every day we should get down on our hands and knees and thank God that we were blessed to be born in the freest and strongest country on this speck of dust we call Earth. Then thank Him for the men and women willing to serve, fight, and sacrifice to protect that freedom. And pray that one day, other nations might experience even a fraction of the liberty we often take for granted. We’re not perfect. None of us are, and we never will be. Perfection belongs to the Big Man upstairs and His Son. But man… what an incredible time to be grateful— for this country, for the people who defend it, and for the freedoms we enjoy every single day. Anytime, Anyplace. Semper Fi. by @close.quarterz

Tech. Sgt. Ian Patterson served 15 years in the Air Force as a Tactical Air Control Party operator and instructor. He died Oct. 17 in San Antonio, and a TACP family is now facing the hardest days of their lives. The TACP Foundation has opened the TACP Family Support Fund for his family. All net proceeds go directly to them to help with expenses and the months ahead. If you're able, comment TACP and we'll DM you the link to give. If not, share this post so it reaches someone who can. Our hearts are with his family, his teammates and the entire TACP community. U.S. Air Force photos by Airman 1st Class Jasmine Thomas, Airman 1st Class Michael Sanders and Tech. Sgt. Dagan took five days of leave just to sleep. Then the phone rang three times. His wife’s aunt told him to turn on the news. He looked at the screen, tried to process what he was seeing, and knew immediately: "We're going some place." Ethan joined Dagan Van Oosten on the Nomadic Research Podcast to talk about that morning and how everything shifted in an instant. Those lived experiences are why our team at Close Quarters works exclusively with military and veteran nonprofits.
