Very exciting first impressions of our upcycling fashion collaboration with fashion design students of Northumbria School of Design. After a comprehensive lecture series on sustainable fashion over several months, the second phase has started with the practical task of creating fashion from factory textile waste, such as cut-offs, selvage, fabric swatches, color cards and deadstock. We are looking forward to share the final results very soon 👏

Cleaning up textile chemical labs. #whatsinmyclothes? Besides fibre production, wet processing is the most difficult production step when it comes to ensuring social- and environmental compliance alike. Countless chemicals are used during washing, bleaching, dyeing and finishing to achieve the best color outcome and performance properties (eg. anti-pilling, quick-dry, wrinkle-free, water repellent) and YES, many of these substances are toxic and harmful to human health and the environment, especially to aquatic life.
Dyeing and finishing recipes are often quite delicate, consisting of many different substances in specific ratios and compositions. Adjusting these recipes with alternative, non-hazardous chemicals while still achieving the same results takes time, which makes it challenging to eliminate certain chemicals from the production in a short time. by @closedloopfashion

Swipe to see the ugly truth behind fabrics ➡️
This year, for the first time, Fashion Revolution Week puts special emphasis on tiers further down the textile supply chain by asking #whomademyfabric? If we would believe in the marketing campaigns of big global fashion brands, one would think fashion only consists of sustainable or natural materials and lately suddenly everything is also circular. The truth is far from this: the global production has increased from an estimated 107 million metric tons (2018) of materials in to an estimated 111 million metric tons (2019), with less than 20% of that holding any sort of sustainability credential and with fibers originating from non-renewable resources continuing to push up the growth curve.
These days, the majority of fabrics are made from fiber blends, mixing together all sorts of natural and man-made fibers. Unfortunately, with the currently existing recycling technologies, many of these blends can’t be separated for recycling and therefore simply end up on landfill or being incinerated.
What do we learn from this? When buying new clothes, always check the label inside to see #whatsinmyclothes? by @closedloopfashion

Meet Rifki, a young and enthusiastic operator of the warp knitting machine in a fabric mill. Here, the yarns are transformed into elastic, fine knitted fabrics. While warp knit is mainly used to produce Raschel or Tricot fabrics (for example for lingerie), a circular knitting process is applied to produce the fabrics for T-shirts, Polos, Tank tops etc.
Fast fashion is highly depending on knitwear and Covid-19 has changed shopping habits even further: brands are including much more knitwear into their collections now to match consumers’ demand for comfortable clothes, that are cheaper, but fashionable. Knitwear is currently one of the fastest growing product segments. by @closedloopfashion

#WhoMadeMyYarn? What you see in the picture: a cotton spinning mill in Bangladesh. What you don’t see: the massive heat, fiber fly, dry air and loud noises from the bale opening, carding and spinning machines, that make it impossible to communicate with one another. Transforming raw material into yarn will always stay pure fascination for me. I always say, if everyone had the chance to visit a spinning mill once in their life, they would probably change their consuming habit forever. Just the spinning process alone is so complex with all that heavy machinery, it is so time and resource consuming that it makes it hard to understand how it is possible to sell clothes for cheap prices, especially considering that it is only one of the many production steps within a textile supply chain. Other than in garment manufacturing, this production step is mainly automized, no water is needed in the cotton spinning process, but a lot of energy. Cotton is highly flammable, therefore the implementation of fire safety compliance measures is always one of our prime concerns at this state. taken in Dhaka, Bangladesh by @closedloopfashion

FASHION REVOLUTION is about putting a spotlight on the current challenges we are facing within the textile industry, it is about connecting with the people that made our clothes, it is about remembering the victims of the tragic Rana Plaza building collapse 8 years ago which caused the death of 1,138 garment workers, it is about demanding brands to clean up their supply chains, to stop exploiting finit resources, polluting our environment and to guarantee fair and safe working conditions for all humans involved in the production process - especially in this time of the global pandemic, it is about asking governments for a systemic change AND this week is also about questioning our very own consuming habits. Your voice does make a difference. Join the #fashionrevolution week and ask brands #whomademyclothes? taken in Rana Plaza Disaster - Savar, Bangladesh by @closedloopfashion

COVID-19 has exposed the textile industry’s vulnerability and its poor set-up. But the struggles of the past year only gave us a small taste of what lies ahead, if we don’t take action against climate change now.
Over the course of the past months, since the new corona virus outbreak, the Closed Loop Fashion team has been taken strong actions to support the much needed reset of the fashion industry by catalyzing a new way of doing business, build back green and to take the current state to accelerate an industry wide transformation towards a more resilient, sustainable and circular business model. by @closedloopfashion
