You'd think after three parents, this would get easier. It doesn't.

But writing is cathartic and puts what's in my heart on paper for all to see.

To know this woman was to truly love her and to be loved without constraint. She never ever gave up on a person. If you were in her orbit she loved you with such an enormity.

Oh sweet Mam-Ma you were the last one of our parents and we surely miss you. I am so grateful that you got to spend your last months with us. I will always be grateful for that and our porch talks, our bed snuggles and our "Hey good morning" and our "I love yous." I only wish we could've done it sooner.

But all my sadness is erased when I picture you waltzing into heaven to be reunited with Papa - that must have been something. I know you will forever be watching over us all.

Secretly, I hope you zoomed in on a skateboard taking them all by storm!

𝐇𝐀𝐔𝐓𝐄 𝐌𝐄𝐒𝐒: 𝐀𝐧 𝐄𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐍𝐎𝐁𝐎𝐃𝐘 𝐀𝐬𝐤𝐞𝐝 𝐅𝐨𝐫, 𝐁𝐮𝐭 𝐇𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐖𝐞 𝐀𝐫𝐞 🌪️👠

Well, 𝐌𝐎𝐓𝐇𝐄𝐑 𝐍𝐀𝐓𝐔𝐑𝐄 certainly made an entrance. And frankly, I thought she was a little dramatic.

She’s rearranged our landscaping, relocated a few trees, and left us with enough debris to build a small village.

But girls, if there’s one thing I know how to do, it’s make the best of a situation. And preferably in a fabulous outfit.

So when 𝟏𝟒 𝐍𝐄𝐖 𝐜𝐚𝐛𝐢 𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐚𝐥𝐬 showed up in the wake of Hurricane Isaias, I did what any perfectly reasonable, slightly fashion-obsessed woman would do.

I got dressed.
Found a pile of debris.
And struck a pose.

Because why should the cleanup crews have all the fun?

Introducing 𝐀𝐋 𝐈𝐍 𝐆𝐎𝐎𝐃 𝐓𝐈𝐌𝐄, a collection that couldn’t have arrived at a better time. A little cashmere, a little cheetah, some sparkle, a few studs, and a whole lot of reasons to get dressed.

Of course, behind the humor is 𝐀 𝐂𝐎𝐌𝐌𝐔𝐍𝐈𝐓𝐘 𝐓𝐇𝐀𝐓 𝐇𝐀𝐒 𝐁𝐄𝐄𝐍 𝐓𝐇𝐑𝐎𝐔𝐆𝐇 𝐀 𝐋𝐎𝐓. My heart is with everyone still picking up the pieces. Sometimes a little laughter and a sense of normalcy are just what we need.

And while I may have spent the afternoon pretending the debris piles were the backdrop for a Vogue photo shoot, rest assured I’ll be back in my Nike shorts and rain boots before you can say FEMA.

Mother Nature may have rearranged the neighborhood, but she hasn’t touched my sense of style OR my sensw of humor.

A little debris. A lot of style. And a whole lot of gratitude that we’re still standing.

It is with a sad yet happy heart that I share that Scott and Brett’s precious mom, and Eddie’s beloved aunt, Dolores, marched into heaven yesterday afternoon.

It is not lost on me that she followed Hurricane Isaias for two reasons. First, it would be just like her to want us to feel safe and cared for. Secondly, and perhaps more importantly, Isaias means “Yahweh is salvation” or “God saves.”

If there is one word to encapsulate her life, it would be hospitality.

There was never a time she didn’t try to feed us.

"You want some cheese toast?”
“No, ma’am.”
“I’ll put ham on it.”
“No, thank you.”
“You want jelly only? I can do that.”
“No, really, I’m good.”
“Cinnamon toast? I can put frosting on it!”

Seriously, she always ended up winning that battle because she wanted you fed and enjoying what she enjoyed.

She was kind and funny and so devoted to her friends and family.

Her grandchildren spent a lifetime on her living room floor. She always had a pallet spread out for the grandkids, laden with all their favorite toys. And although it wasn’t her style to get down on the floor and join the fun, it was her pure delight to make sure they had everything they needed. And yes, that included snacks within reach.

For me, she instilled what it means to be part of a family and the importance of being genuinely tied to the people God gave us.

Recently, her cousins came for a visit. I shared with them that they shouldn’t be disappointed if the visit was a short one. And to my amazement—but not really—they laughed and giggled for over four hours. She mustered up all the strength she had to be present. Those ties mattered to her.

One thing I realized recently is something I think we all took for granted.

Mam-Ma had her own opinions about life. However, she always stood quietly in the background, letting Papa shine.

As she aged, we saw more and more of HER. Her thoughts. Her views. Her opinions.

I loved that I got a front-row seat to what I thought was a transformation, but in reality, that woman had been there all along. We were just getting to know her in a different way.

When Lucy was two, my dad built her and Ben a playhouse.

When we moved from that house to where we live now, some very good friends loaded this beauty onto a tractor trailer and placed her in the corner of our backyard. That was no easy feat.

If these little walls could talk, oh, the secrets and dreams and schemes they would share of all the children who occupied them.

I always thought Dad was a good builder. He was. In fact, he was an excellent one. We are blessed with many of his works. Some small and some deserving of a landscape befitting of a queen.

Last night, the storms raged and the winds blew through this yard. Trees are down and the yard is carpeted in what was just yesterday a resplendent canopy shading us from the relentless Florida sunshine. Yet, here she stands, quietly in the backyard, holding the promise of all the little children yet to play within her walls.

Recently, I’ve thought about tearing her down. Converting her into a she shed or even a chicken coop or maybe building a fireplace for cool autumn nights. But she has weathered yet another storm...

I think she deserves more. Maybe this storm has lit a little fire inside me. So maybe a restoration is in order. Not only as an homage to the hands that built her and the love poured into every single nook and cranny. But also as a reminder of resiliency and strength.

And as a promise...
of all the good things yet to come.

𝙸 𝚕𝚘𝚟𝚎 pulling things out of 𝚖𝚢 𝚌𝚕𝚘𝚜𝚎𝚝 and seeing them differently.

𝙸 𝚕𝚘𝚟𝚎 𝚐𝚊𝚝𝚑𝚎𝚛𝚒𝚗𝚐 𝚠𝚒𝚝𝚑 𝚏𝚛𝚒𝚎𝚗𝚍𝚜 around a rack of clothes and talking about what works, what doesn’t, what we’d never wear—and what we suddenly can’t live without.

But even more than that, 𝚒 𝚕𝚘𝚟𝚎 what I get to DO with it.

So I’ve been wondering…

I’ve always been a little 𝚘𝚋𝚜𝚎𝚜𝚜𝚎𝚍 𝚠𝚒𝚝𝚑 𝚕𝚊𝚢𝚎𝚛𝚜.

Patterns layered with textures.
Old mixed with new.
In clothing, in architecture, in a room…really, everywhere I look.

And I have a 𝚜𝚙𝚎𝚌𝚒𝚊𝚕 𝚙𝚕𝚊𝚌𝚎 in my heart 𝚏𝚘𝚛 𝚘𝚕𝚍 𝚝𝚑𝚒𝚗𝚐𝚜!

Not necessarily valuable things.
Just things that have lived a life before they found their way to me.

𝙲𝙰𝚂𝙴 𝙸𝙽 𝙿𝙾𝙸𝙽𝚃: my collection of hand brooms.

I’ve picked these up here and there over the last couple of years, probably spending no more than forty dollars on the whole lot.

But I love them.

Because I can’t help wondering about the hands that held them before mine.

🧹The kitchens they swept.
🧹The porches they tidied.
🧹The crumbs, the dust, the nooks and crannies they were responsible for keeping clean.

When we renovated our house, I already knew these little workhorses 𝚍𝚎𝚜𝚎𝚛𝚟𝚎𝚍 𝚊 𝚙𝚕𝚊𝚌𝚎 of their own.

So up they went.

Layered together.
Different shapes. Different textures. Different stories.

And now I walk by them and 𝚜𝚖𝚒𝚕𝚎 every single time.

Maybe that’s what I love most about collecting old things.

They remind me that 𝚋𝚎𝚊𝚞𝚝𝚢 𝚍𝚘𝚎𝚜𝚗’𝚝 𝚑𝚊𝚟𝚎 𝚝𝚘 𝚋𝚎 𝚎𝚡𝚙𝚎𝚗𝚜𝚒𝚟𝚎.
It doesn’t have to be 𝚙𝚎𝚛𝚏𝚎𝚌𝚝.
And it certainly doesn’t have to be 𝚗𝚎𝚠.

Sometimes the things that have worked the hardest—and lived the longest—deserve to be put on display.

𝚂𝙾 𝚈𝙴𝚂, I’m the girl with the rack of clothes.

𝙱𝚄𝚃 I’m 𝙰𝙻𝚂𝙾 the girl who hangs old brooms on the wall and wonders about the women who held them before me.

There are a lot more layers to me than clothes.

And at 60?

I feel like 𝙸’𝚖 𝚓𝚞𝚜𝚝 𝚐𝚎𝚝𝚝𝚒𝚗𝚐 𝚜𝚝𝚊𝚛𝚝𝚎𝚍.
