Semester has started!

Beyond introducing the new cohort of specialized masters students at the Schulich School of Business, I will be quite busy on campus!

Primarily, Shay and I will be taking our expertise to the Lassonde School of Engineering to help shape the next generation of Tech entrepreneurs.

Beyond that, I’m proud to announce I have been featured on the advisory panel to help shape next year’s Masters of Management program. I am excited to give back to my former program, and most importantly, use my expertise as a career coach, recruiter, and former student, to build out next year’s program layout.

A major theme at this year’s Alumni Mentorship Day was…AI. Maybe you’ve heard of it.

Corporations love it, schools hate it.

As someone who works in a corporation, teaches at a school, and does career coaching with everyone in between, I see the dilemma from every perspective.

Everyone looks confident.
Almost nobody has it fully figured out.

What you’re seeing is the polished version.
The job updates, the strong opinions, the clear direction.

What you’re not seeing is the doubt. The second guessing. The moments where they feel like they don’t belong.

That feeling has a name. Imposter syndrome.

It tends to show up most in people who actually care and want to do well. You start thinking you’re behind or not as capable, when in reality, you’re just growing into something new.

Most people around you have felt this at some point. They just kept moving forward anyway.

So if you feel unsure right now, it doesn’t mean you don’t belong.

It usually means you’re exactly where growth is happening.

Not knowing exactly where you’re going early in your career isn’t a failure. It’s actually the norm.

Most people don’t wake up at 22 with a perfectly mapped out plan. They try things. They pivot. They learn what they like by first discovering what they don’t.

Careers aren’t straight lines anymore. They’re experiments.

The pressure to “have it all figured out” usually comes from comparison. But the truth is, many of the people who look like they have a clear path are still figuring it out behind the scenes.

Your early career isn’t supposed to be perfect. It’s supposed to be informative.

Every job, project, mistake, and random opportunity is just data helping you understand where you thrive and where you don’t.

So if you feel a little lost right now, you’re probably exactly where you’re supposed to be.

You’re not behind.

It just feels like you are because no one actually teaches you how careers work.

In school, you’re told to get good grades, build a resume, and apply to jobs. But no one really explains things like positioning yourself, networking properly, or how hiring decisions are actually made.

So when things don’t work out, it’s easy to internalize it as “I’m not good enough” or “I’m falling behind.”

But in most cases, it’s not a capability issue.

It’s an information gap.

Once you understand how the process really works, everything starts to feel a lot less random and a lot more in your control.

And that shift alone can change how you approach your entire career. by @clovercareercoaching
