The annual Outstanding Biological Sciences Faculty Research Award recognizes significant achievements in biological sciences research of a faculty member in the Department of Biological Sciences at UNC Charlotte. The inaugural 2023 DBS Faculty Research Award goes to Dr. Danillo Augusto and Dr. Bao-Hua Song!

Dr. Augusto joined our faculty in Fall 2022 after his postdoctoral training at UCSF. In 2022-2023, he was awarded ~$4.2M in funding and has published two papers, including a Nature paper identifying the strongest genetic association of a HLA variant with asymptomatic SARS-CoV2 infection, leading to huge media attention and public impact.

Dr. Song joined our faculty in Fall 2012 after her postdoctoral training at Duke. In 2022-2023, she was awarded ~$3.4M in funding, was recognized as UNC Charlotte’s first Mid-Career Awardee from the NSF, and published four papers.

Congratulations and well deserved! 🥇 #cltbiology #ourfacultyareawesome #research taken in UNC Charlotte by @cltbiology
