And no, this isn’t about Christina Applegate—who taught me to embrace my anger in healthy ways (like saying “F*ck MS”). While her misdiagnosis speaks to the complexities of chronic or autoimmune disease and shortcomings of our healthcare system in addressing them, actress Selma Blair’s assault case has left the MS community reeling. First, because an apology wasn’t her immediate reply but rather, some vague “medical episode” excuse )with a brief mention of mixing alcohol and medication), which left the public to assume that her MS might be involved. But then, because her second statement explicitly blamed her outburst on her MS—saying that it happened because she missed a dose of Nuedexta, which she says she takes for her MS. While Nuedexta is an approved medication for management of pseudobulbar affect, a symptom that can (although rarely) be brought on by MS, I have little empathy for a grown woman with plenty of her own resources failing to take an important medication, or getting too inebriated—or whatever actually happened here. While my thoughts are with the flight crew injured, the toll this carelessness has taken goes beyond immediate injury. Celebrities are accountable to their platforms, and here, the MS community deserved more. Sure, MS can make you lose control of some functions, but it can’t alone be the cause for assault (as the court also found). I hope she gets the help she needs.

It can’t always be the VS runway, some of us have to hold it down in the neurology wing🪽🌷

Third and final year: 1 month down, 8 to go✨Reflecting on where I was when I received my MS diagnosis 5 years ago and all the unknowns I’ve navigated since then to get here brings me plenty of motivation to finish strong.🍵 #mswarrior #multiplesclerosis #msdiagnosis #livingwithms #lawschool by @clumsyco_

Long time no see, IG! If we’re honest, I didn’t take time away—I just forget to post here after posting on TikTok sometimes 🤐 My b… I was also recently traveling abroad and am excited to share travel tips soon 💗 But for now, here is a collection of thoughts and ideas on how to support someone who is newly diagnosed with MS (or maybe also chronic illnesses and autoimmune diseases in general). Team Clumsy Co’s third year at Bike MS Deception Pass: powering through a rainstorm, testing our limits, and fundraising like hell!🌀I’m so grateful and proud of this year’s crew, who joined me in biking up to 115 miles and raising nearly $10,000 for a cure! 🧡 This event has truly become an annual highlight in my own battle with MS. On one hand, I’m pushing myself to gain strength and use my body as it is now while I still can—including my senses because this ride is STUNNING—and on the other hand, I get to bring in my friends and see so many riders push themselves for a purpose beyond themselves. And I still can’t believe I biked 115 miles on those hills. Exhausted, will text later 😂 by @clumsyco_

For our third year riding the @bike_ms Deception Pass Classic, my team (about a dozen 28 year olds with varying degrees of cycling experience) has decided training rides are important. 😂 This was our first group training ride this summer, and while we were expecting it to be ~15-18 miles, Jillian’s Garmin revealed that we are bad at guessing, because we did 25..😭 but with gorgeous weather and great teammates, who could complain!? I love participating in Bike MS because it helps me stay strong in my own battle with MS while also bringing some of my close friends together to push themselves and push for progress.🧡🎗️ Learn more and support our fundraising at the link in my bio to fuel us further! 🚴🏽‍♀️⛰️🍻 #mswarrior #livingwithms #multiplesclerosis #cycling #bikems by @clumsyco_

Today marks 5 years since my MS diagnosis—5 years since my life was ultimately forever changed. Finding out that I had a lifelong illness which only progresses and has no cure was life-shattering. But I had to pick up all my pieces, quickly, to enjoy what MS has yet to take from me (my mobility, my remaining vision, my executive function). I made it my mission to (1) live while I’m young; (2) advocate for the millions of other people impacted by this illness and similar ones; and (3) share my story to help people get through their own MS diagnosis and journey, especially other young adults. In the process of achieving these things, I have been frustrated by my body and questioning every twitch or spasm. I’ve moved through mental and physical pain, and learned so many invaluable lessons. I had to forgive my body for betraying me, and find a good therapist. I had to learn who my real friends were, and had to learn to stop people pleasing (immediately) to save energy. I make choices with my energy every day and trade offs with my body to keep my MS at bay. I am so fortunate to have experienced stability since diagnosis, but I know that this is never certain. So I try new things. I speak about MS on panels and in Congress. I study law, despite the warnings that it might not be possible. And I couldn’t do it without my awesome family and friends, who show up to silly events for me and who are there for me as I face impossible choices and big emotions. Cheers to five years. And yes, I coined the F*CK MS party😂. #multiplesclerosis #autoimmune #mswarrior #msdiagnosis #msawareness by @clumsyco_

ops and for no good reason…🔫 #autoimmune #msjourney #mswarrior #multiplesclerosis #briumvi by @clumsyco_

A life-changing medical diagnosis like MS splits your life into two parts: before and after. I’ve been grieving who I was before I knew I had this disease since 2021. But as I continue to grow around my grief and move beyond diagnosis, I am slowly becoming more and more in touch with who I’ve always been. She is a passionate advocate with unwavering optimism and lust for life. But it took me a year to begin to forgive my body. Two years to feel secure. And three years to remember my ambition. Soon we’ll be 5 years into life with MS and I know there is still more beauty and achievement awaiting me—No matter what MS takes.

May is #mentalhealthawareness month, and my battle with MS has also had its mental toll. Compassion is a mindset I cultivate every day I can—starting with self-love. And service toward the cause has kept me inspired and driven. I’m proud of who I’ve worked to be in spite of depression, especially prominent in my teen years. And I think that me “before MS” would be, too.

“A bit about why I was in DC with the National MS Society over spring break!

Healthcare costs associated with my disease modifying therapy, MRIs, and labs have caused disruptions and unnecessary stress on top of an already demanding disease. It almost prevented me from going to law school. And MS research is not only crucial for progress toward better treatment, potential prevention, and repair of the damage MS causes — it is also my primary source of hope for a cure.

As a Public Policy Conference first-timer, I look forward to continuing to be a voice in the federal and state MS advocacy work of the National MS Society in order to drive policies that get us to a world free of MS.”
