11 years ago, I started writing a book. I started it on a whim, mostly because I was too lazy to do a political science thesis and just wanted to write something creative, because that seemed “easier”? (Famous last words.) I started writing it because I love Beijing so much. And then I kept writing it because it was my favorite thing I’d ever written; it was the thing that showed me I could be a writer, because I wrote it and kept writing it. It accompanied me from the basement A level of Frost Library at Amherst back home to Naperville, where I waited tables at my local pancake house, and then with me in my banged-up Corolla all the way to Los Angeles, where I arrived knowing no one and nothing about how to make it as a writer in Hollywood. Trying to become a TV writer in LA is hard and my novel was always my anchor, the thing I came back to, again and again. It was the thing I could keep writing even when all my other endeavors were flailing. It was a balm and it was proof.Today, my novel hits shelves. It’s about many things but mostly it’s about two friends admiring each other, envying each other, needing each other, and ultimately, loving each other. So obviously, my book wouldn’t exist without my friends. One of the big lessons of the novel is that in life you really only get a few chances, a few years, and if you’re lucky, a few great friends. So there are so many to thank but for now, I simply must first thank @kateboosh and @regularbear, my mirrors, my ears, my shoulders, my wings and my wind. Thank you for reading draft after draft and for being the loudest cheerleaders on god’s green earth. Thank you to my agent, Sylvie Carr, who took a chance on me when I was 22 (admittedly, it’s easier to believe you can write when you have an agent telling you you can!), and to Elizabeth DeMeo and Tin House for turning my delusion into reality and giving it the best home I could have asked for. Thank you to my family, of course, for everything. I wrote this novel as a way of speaking to you. And thank you all for reading and hyping me up over the course of the last decade. Finally, thank you to my book, a dream that kept me afloat. Now on to the next dream! by @clurtheflaneur

👀 Writing Hope: A Closer Look at Xu Zechen's Beijing Sprawl Day: Wednesday, May 20Time: 7-8:30pm EDTLocation: ZoomPrice: $25Beijing Sprawl, by Xu Zechen and translated by Jeremy Tiang and Eric Abrahamsen, introduces us to 17-year-old Muyu, who’s come to Beijing from a small village in search of a dream. In Beijing, however, dreams rarely come true, and in nine interconnected stories, Muyu grapples with hope and all its maintenance, loss, and recapture. In one of the final stories, “Brother,” Muyu meets a man named Dai Shanchuan who has come to Beijing looking for his doppelganger. Ahead of class, students should read the story and come prepared to discuss. We will be closely analyzing its structure and the ways in which Xu sets up and then meets or subverts our expectations in its finale. Then, students will complete a writing exercise. Reading multiple chapters of Beijing Sprawl (or even the entirety!) will enhance the student’s experience, but it is not required. We will also discuss how Xu manipulates expectations in the book as a whole.✎ Sign up through our Luma 🤩Claire Jia @clurtheflaneur is a writer from the Chicago suburbs. She has written on TV shows such as Zombies: The Reanimated Series, Awkwafina is Nora from Queens, Fresh Off the Boat, and Gangsters of Shanghai. She co-wrote the 2024 Peabody Award-winning video game We Are OFK. Her writing has appeared in The New York Times, Reductress, The Establishment, The Rumpus, and more. Her parents are from Beijing, and there’s nothing she loves more than haggling for stationary in a chaotic Beijing marketplace. She peaked at age sixteen, when she became the All-State Illinois Shotokan Karate Club Kihon Green Belt Champion. Today she lives in Los Angeles with her friends. by @clurtheflaneur
