Monochrome wildlife⬛️⬜️

Some new and already shared images I thought looked good edited in black and white. I’ve been posting a lot of B&W photos recently, but I just love how it can bring out details and shapes you would otherwise not see in color.

All photos taken by me with a Canon EOS R7, and various Canon lenses.

More photos from the vintage 50mm lens.

This is Tilly, my family’s deaf chiweenie, enjoying the summer evening. I also threw in a photo of some backlit crepe myrtle leaves after a light rain that had some cool bokeh. by @cm_wildlife_

Dog day evenings

This is my dog Bonnie, who doesn’t always love getting her photo taken but luckily cooperated this time to take some test shots. I recently got a simple adapter to fit my vintage canon FD lenses onto my R7. I love the bokeh the fd 50mm f1.8 brings out, especially the pink and green colors of the Crepe Myrtle behind her. by @cm_wildlife_

Went on a little Polaroid repair side quest today after I figured out I had a pack of 600 instant film that I had bought a while back for my SX-70 Land Camera. Upon loading the film the camera motor kept running to reset the photo count and I had to manually stop it so it didn’t run through the whole film pack. This being an old camera I had bought for relatively cheap at a furniture store (and that I had only tested twice without success) broke. I had to remove the leather casing and remove the bottom plate to get to the faulty motor coupler and make a kind of makeshift repair that didn’t require any replacement parts, but did require a lot of tedious labor. It then ran perfectly through the four photos left. The first photo is of my Polaroid SX-70 Land Camera which was manufactured sometime between 1972 and 1981. The second is a photo of my cat, Smokey, sleeping in a nest of covers on a bed. The third is of my dog Tilly sitting by a window and watching what is happing outside. The newer 600 film has a higher exposure than what would be the original SX-70 film so the photos, even with exposure compensation, tend to turn out overexposed. I just wanted to share some of my experimentation with this awesome camera and its cool design with some Crepe Myrtle flowers! by @cm_wildlife_

More collared lizard photos

Took a lot of photos that I liked and wanted to share, especially ones that get some of the neat plants, granite, and scenery in the background. All photos have different settings but were taken on a R7 with a 100-400mm f5.6-8 lens. taken in Inks Lake State Park - Texas Parks and Wildlife by @cm_wildlife_

🦎

Came across this beautiful eastern collared lizard basking on a large granite outcrop at Inks Lake State Park. The lighting and scene was perfect for some up close shots, and besides some small lighting and sharpening adjustments for sharing on instagram these photos are otherwise unedited.

Black-chinned hummingbird

Took this photo of what is either a female ruby throated or black chinned hummingbird at the the Inks Lake State Park bird blind. The yellow bell flowers framed it nice against a dark background, but I did significantly edit these photos to achieve a certain look, which is something I typically don’t do with wildlife photos. The grain may be a bit too much, but in some cases it helps to make otherwise harshly detailed digital photos softer and easy to look. In the end I’d rather have a more interesting image captured “in camera” than having to alter it to make it more interesting in post. I just think that is the most honest and rewarding way to portray wildlife. However there are some looks, like the one I (maybe unsuccessfully) tried to achieve in this image, that I find fun to create and play around with in hindsight of taking the photo.
If you’ve read this far congratulations on hearing my boring rant, here are some just as interesting camera specs:

Truly any color you like

It seems not a single day has gone by this spring where I haven’t heard the calls of these beautiful birds. These photos are of a male who took a break from singing in the heat to get a quick snack in front of the bird blind. taken in Texas Hill Country by @cm_wildlife_

Native pollinators

I’ve been finding many insects to photograph in the prairie coneflowers, most of which being digger bees. While trying to identify these bees I learned Texas is home to over 1000 species (possibly 1500 according to Texas Master Naturalist) of native bee in Texas! The one wasp on the slide is a parasitoid wasp called Prionyx parkeri that hunts grasshoppers to lay its eggs in! taken in Texas Hill Country by @cm_wildlife_

Rain Lily

(Cooperia pedunculata)

These will always be my favorite flower, I just love seeing them show up in fields after rains and I love how they contrast the dark grass and soil when it’s wet.
This particular lily had a lot of character, seeming a little beat up and holding some droplets on it from a light shower earlier that day. by @cm_wildlife_
