Happy Halloween! Sharing some spooky books to finish up the Halloween weekend 🎃 by @cmari.reads

Little bits and bobs from a day in the city last week. Finally finished Lonely Castle in the Mirror and got to gush about how much I loved it with @anadulttalking (and not shown but has some close encounters with the Boston geese 🪿)

Happy weekend ☀️ by @cmari.reads

End of year curriculum 🍂 I’ve been behind on my reading this year, but I had so much fun setting this up. I’m still determined to read/watch as much as I can before the year is out, but just had fun finding the different themes and connections. How are your reading goals so far? by @cmari.reads

🍂Martyr! review 🍂

When I was in college, I took a literature class that was called “Life and how to Live It” all focused on books that tackled what it means to live a good life and what it means to die a “good” death (and all the intricacies of how we write about life in its different phases. Martyr! took my back to those late-night classes philosophizing about life and death.

This novel tackles the concept of searching for meaning in life and death in a unique way, and Cyrus’s internal struggles with regret and grief were so poignant, especially as he forms this connection with this mysterious deathbed artist.

💖One Last Stop 💖

I had so much fun reading One Last Stop. I love how even though it was rooted in romance, it still spent so much time developing the plot and the characters. Each character felt so unique and fleshed out, and I liked how the side characters had such a big role in the plot itself. I love when romances aren’t centered just around the couple, so I really liked that the story itself was so interesting.

✨last, current, next✨

Summer has really flown by, but I’m excited for everything to come in Autumn. Happy Sunday! by @cmari.reads

What is life if not to spend it filled the people you love?

Mayflies spans across two time periods: first in 1986 during a life-changing music trip among friends, and then 30 years later as they grapple with unforeseen circumstances. It was slow to get into at first for me, but I really got into the story in the second half. There’s something heartbreaking thinking about time as this finite thing and the novel did a good job of portraying the different types of grief between lifelong friends and the difficult choices life brings.

Hope everyone has a fun weekend ahead 🖤 by @cmari.reads

🌊Water Moon Review🌊

I really wanted to like this one 🥲 The concepts feel like they’re out of a Ghibli movie, but where the dream-like world did well, the execution didn’t live up to the hype. I just couldn’t feel invested in the characters and their goals since they felt so one-dimensional, and the emotions felt flat in the more high-stakes scenes. The main character felt like she knew nothing and everything at the same time, and modern references took me out of the otherwise whimsical atmosphere. It’s definitely more of a vibes books than plot so if that’s more you jam then this might be for you.

Will take any and all recommendations for books with Ghibli vibes. by @cmari.reads

🎨My Friends review🎨

This book felt so nostalgic to those times as a kid where summer break felt like a world in itself. I really liked how Fredrik Backman described the past as they reminisced, it felt like you were there experiencing the highs and lows with them.

I also really liked the way that was discussed throughout the book. At the beginning, there’s this allure to the mysterious artist and his famous masterpiece, but it’s really the art itself that’s what makes it special. It’s the life and love that’s captures between the frame that makes it so captivating, something we uncover chapter by chapter.

Let me know if you’ve read it! xx by @cmari.reads

Thought this trend was super fun so wanted to give it a try! I’m not super into astrology but I think it’s fun finding the ways to see yourself in your chart.

Tagging anyone who wants to try it out! ✨ by @cmari.reads

✨Q3 Curriculum✨

Reading slump got me a little sidetracked on my personal challenge for this curriculum but i’m still determined to get back on track. How have you reading goals been so far? by @cmari.reads

It turns out the best way to get out of a reading slump is to read about lesbian vampires.

Aptly named, hunger and this desire for more is a prevalent theme in Hungerstone, with the protagonist’s preconceived notions of what it means to have a fulfilled life being flipped by the appearance of their peculiar guest, Carmila,

I haven’t read the source material this book was based off of, but I liked that they never really point anything to vampires explicitly, there’s more of a growing unease of something not being quite right.
