✨🤘🏽”Latino Studies has completely changed my experience here at UT.” ✨🤘🏽

Sofia Alvarez is one of those students who didn’t come to UT planning to major in Mexican American and Latina/o Studies, but after she took a class or two to fill core degree requirements, she was hooked! We get that a lot. Students take a Latino Studies course, and something really clicks inside of them. Sofia first added a minor, but eventually she embraced the major as she followed her interest and connection to the material. ❤️ ✊🏼✊🏽✊🏾

¿What about you? 💥Have you ever taken a MAS course?💥 All Longhorns are invited to take a class in Latino Studies.

📚 Need a little direction? Here are Sofia’s MALS course recs:📚

MAS 311 Ethnicity and Gender: La Chicana - Lilia Rosas (offered in Fall 2026)
MAS 337I Tejana Cultural Studies - Lilia Rosas
MAS 308E Police/Prisons/Inequality - Michael Roy Hames-García (offered in Fall 2026)

Sofia is a 4th year Civil Engineering and Mexican American and Latina/o Studies double major. She plans to work as an environmental engineer, specifically on the management of water supply, flood control, filtration, and environmental protection.

First round registration is open through April 17th! Search for “MAS” on the UT registration site or go to link in bio to see our digital course catalogue with full course descriptions on our website.

🎉 Latino Studies had the privilege of hosting a retirement celebration for Dr. Mary "Maggie" Rivas-Rodriguez on April 23rd. 🎉

Members from our extended UT community and across Austin gathered to honor her dedication to preserving Latino voices and histories over 27 years at the University of Texas at Austin.

Dr. Rivas-Rodriguez is director of the Center for Mexican American Studies in Latino Studies at UT Austin, a professor in the School of Journalism and Media, and founder and director of the Voces Oral History Center, where she has built one of the nation’s most extensive collections of Latino oral histories, housed in the Benson Latin American Collection. Her retirement will begin in Fall 2026.

We will miss her dearly!

❤️❤️❤️

Ofrendas are assembled to honor and celebrate the lives of those we’ve lost, welcoming their spirits back briefly to the physical world. The altar is adorned with photographs, personal items, and other orfferings to guide and comfort the spirits, marigold flowers (cempasúchil) to help them find their way, and candles to provide light.

All Longhorns are invited to be a part of this beautiful tradition! taken in Gordon-White Building by @cmas_ut
