HAPPY 30th TO MY SISTERRRRRRRRRR @anabelthelioness_xo 🙌🏽🙌🏽🥳🥳🧋🫶🏽🧋🫶🏽

I won’t make this a sappy, long novella post, BUT, I will say how blessed I am to have a best friend since day 1! To watch you grow and navigate life is seriously cool. I’m the proudest sister ever.

Time to celebrate! 30! Sheesh! She’s an adult now everyone! Watch your kneecaps! That’s all I gotta say… 💅🏽😂

Two Puerto Rican kiddos from Southern Arizona.

Growing up, we experienced our culture in the comfort of our own home and maybe one other family friend’s house during the holidays lol. Within those spaces, it was what you’d expect una fiesta Borinqueña to be- loud salsa and merengue playing as early as 9am, drinks, games of dominoes, dancing, people crowding in the kitchen cuz the food is the focal point of the party & folks are helping cook & clean, todo gente talking loud as hell! Outside of that, however, that was about it; very different than how our parents grew up, where Latino Caribbean culture was everywhere and encompassed your whole upbringing, being born on the island then moving to Nueva York.

Fast forward to today living on the west coast. Not quite the Nuyorican east coast culture BUT so many diasporas here and what a joy it is to experience all these nuances & connections between each others cultures.

When I first started to take this pop up seriously, a small negative Nancy voice popped into the back of my head telling me, “Yo, you haven’t even been to the island since you were a kid! How do you know the food you’re making is even authentic?” Or, “You don’t even speak fluent Spanish, are you even legit?” I was low key feeling that imposter syndrome kicking in.

To the Negative Nancy, I say, I’m 100% Puerto Rican baybee. It’s in my blood. It’s the food I make, the broken choppy Spanish I speak, my curly hair, my salsa dancing, my loud ass voice, it’s all Boricua, all me. & it’s as authentic as you’ll get. Period.

All this to say, this beautiful day shared with all these incredible friends, our primos y primas, was a special one. It was a rare treat to be immersed in everything Latino, Afro Caribbean culture; the music, conversations, smells, colors, food, it soothed the soul really.

Muchísimas gracias to @elchinchorro.la for bringing all of us together, @moodbymatteo & @anishaspice for inviting us into your home, @welcometoelbarrio for listening to our stories & sharing our culture with the masses, los chefs @wepapalmundo @casadelola.la para la comida!

Two Puerto Rican kiddos, out here in LA!

Yesterday was my birthday. 🥳

It was chill. I voted, did laundry, and went out for Korean food with my sister. Wonderfully simple.

But on a reflective note - looking back on all that transpired from my birthday last year to now, it’s been the wildest ride! So wild that if I didn’t have a seat belt on the ride I would’ve flown off for sure!

But alas, I stay wearing my seatbelt! And yeah, I may have gotten whiplash, and I got that roller coaster hairdo- all blown out, and I may have felt like throwing up a couple times going upside down, but you know what, I rode the ride!

And here we are. Feet back on the ground.

As I celebrate another year older, I also want to celebrate that in this very moment, I feel an alignment where, even if it’s just for a moment, things seem to be falling into their rightful places. Slowly but surely.

It’s the little W’s. I’ll take it.

Feliz cumple to me, the adrenaline junkie who lovesssss a good roller coaster ride. 😎🎢🥳♊️🫶🏽
