This week marks about 1 year since I lost my job at Entertainment Weekly. As I’ve pivoted into freelance writing over these past 12 months, I’m proud of the work I’ve still been able to accomplish: covering genre shows I love like Daredevil, Andor, Severance, and Fallout for Gold Derby and The Wheel of Time for TV Guide. I also just made my debut for Netflix’s Tudum, highlighting which of their many amazing anime shows are fun watchers for newcomers.
I also started my own Substack blog (cmholub.substack.com) where I’m writing about all kinds of things I’m still looking for both full-time work and more freelance opportunities, so feel free to hit me up if you have any leads or ideas! by @cmholub

Almost exactly six years ago, in October 2019, at the height of the then-ongoing Democratic presidential primary, I went with friends to a Bernie Sanders rally in Queensbridge. It was a beautiful day, and a beautiful crowd — I remember thinking that no two people near me looked exactly alike, all different heights/genders/races/ages. At the peak of his speech Bernie asked us all to look around and ask ourselves if we were willing to fight for the people next to us as much as for ourselves. We all shouted yes, yes, YES!!!

But nationwide Democratic voters didn’t agree, and Joe Biden won the primary, and our hopes for a Sanders presidency based on solidarity and mutual aid were dashed. Over the next few years, in the darkest days of COVID and genocide in Gaza and then Trump’s return to power, I often found myself wondering whether that 2019 rally was going to be the best that politics ever got for me: A golden dream that was too good for this world. I worried that Bernie had been our last chance for a better future, and we had missed it.

That’s why I was so excited that Zohran Mamdani jumped into the mayoral race on a Bernie-like platform of sensible economic fixes to make life more livable for everyone. Even when he was first polling at 1%, I was happy he was willing to expand the boundaries of the debate in our city. Then his numbers kept climbing. Gracie and I knocked doors for him in both the June primary and this week’s general election!

The full-circle moment came last week, when we went to another political rally in Queens — this time it was Zohran and Bernie together, plus AOC and other inspiring young leaders too. During his speech, Zohran revealed that the 2019 Queensbridge rally was when he first launched his own campaign for the New York State Assembly. He won that campaign, and this one too. Last night Zohran delivered the most inspiring political victory speech I’ve ever seen; I spent it alternately cheering, cackling, and crying into Gracie’s shoulder.

So I had been wrong all along: Bernie wasn’t our last chance. We have a whole generation of Bernie’s now. Can’t wait for what’s next by @cmholub

It’s been a busy October! Earlier this month, I attended New York Comic Con for the first time since leaving EW, and it felt good to prove I could still cover my favorite annual pop culture event. I had the time to check out some comics panels for once, and even moderated a panel on the Main Stage! With the producer and voice stars of “Adventure Time: Fionna & Cake”! And of course, got to see some awesome cosplayers.

Then I headed to Chicago for a fun bachelor weekend with some of my best friends and my sisters, the greatest “best men” I could ask for! (Just look at that shirt they made for me, heh) Yes the wedding is still months away, but fall is my favorite season so I wanted to do it now!

Then I met Gracie and her mom in Maine for some R&R, and got to check out the absolutely magnificent fall colors out there! Hope you’re all enjoying autumn 🍂 by @cmholub
