Honored to Celebrate Robert Hilliard as the 2026 James R. Brodie Award recipient for CMSA Softball.

Robert passed away last year following the 2025 CMSA softball season. While this nomination comes a year later than it should have, it is not too late to honor someone who embodied everything this award stands for.

Robert was a ray of light. An incredible friend, amazing teammate, and tireless advocate for our league. He had a gift for making everyone feel welcome and making every softball Sunday memorable.

Week after week, Robert created awards recognizing the best players and sportsmanship on every team we played, sharing the photos for everyone to enjoy. It became something people looked forward to every Sunday and a tradition we are proud to carry on today.

Robert believed deeply in giving back. He led school supply drives, fundraisers for Center on Halsted, and other projects benefiting Chicago. He didn’t just talk about helping others, he made it happen.

His personality was impossible to miss. Robert won the first and only Strut to First Base competition at CMSA All-Star Weekend. A perfect snapshot of someone bold, hilarious, and completely unafraid to be himself.

Away from softball, Robert was known as beloved drag queen Edie Morecock. He mentored teammates who remain active in drag today. His Edie portrait and heels filled with $2 bills still hang at our sponsor bar, Farraguts.

After his passing, we built a memorial bench in his name on the bike path between the fields, so Robert can watch every game, every weekend, for years to come. We raised enough that the remaining funds were donated to LGBTQ+ organizations across Chicago.

Robert made Sundays better, gave back without being asked, and left traditions and memories that live on today.

We can think of no one who more fully exemplifies what the James Brodie Award stands for.

Jim Brodie started playing softball in CMSA in the early 1980’s. He was an outstanding hitter and won the batting title for the league in 1985. He was also a tough competitor but someone who insisted on playing by the rules and someone who strongly believed in fairness and good sportsmanship.

Jim was also a lot of fun. He taken in Farraguts by @cmsachicago

Every day there’s a new song I’m obsessed with from Madonna’s “CONFESSIONS II” album on a loop! 🪩

When M said the next album would be “Confessions on a Dance Floor 2” … i rolled my eyes. Damn was i wrong bc this album is an artistic explosion that takes themes from the past and makes them something new.

Shout out to my friends who just go with it when i put a pink vail on them. #madonna #gottabump #confessionsii taken in Montrose Beach by @cmsachicago
