Happy birthday, Kate! 🎂

Simply put, CNU Sailing would not be where it is today without this incredible human. Try to find one person in the last ten years who has done more for this program than Kate. Go ahead. We’ll wait.

Class of 2008, Kate has been all-in for this team for a long time. When COVID hit and the team was left rudderless, she stepped up to keep the proverbial lights on through a coaching transition. And when the program needed help finding its footing again this year, there was never much question about who would help lead the charge.

A lot of what makes this program special exists because of people like Kate: the ones who show up, put in the work behind the scenes, and care enough to keep pushing forward when things get tough.

An absolute force for CNU Sailing and an even better human. We hope you have a fantastic birthday and, for once, get to sit back and let everyone else do the work. You’ve certainly earned it! by @cnusailingalumni

The other half of the name on this weekend's regatta.
C.J. Woollum first came to CNC in the '70s as a young assistant basketball coach, an Alexandria kid by way of Kentucky Wesleyan. He spent nine seasons at Marshall, then came home in 1984 to lead CNC basketball. He never really left.
Twenty-six seasons. 502 wins, the first Division III men's coach in Virginia to reach 500. Seventeen NCAA tournaments and an Elite Eight. On the side, he coached golf to six NCAA tournaments of its own.
In 1987 he became Director of Athletics as well. Over the next 25 years he turned a small commuter-school department into a Division III powerhouse. He built the Freeman Center, started football from scratch, and won 15 straight USA South President's Cups. The Freeman Center court still carries his name.
Through all of it, C.J. was in sailing's corner.

The Webbs built this program. C.J. made sure it always had a friend at the top. This weekend we race the Webb/Woollum Regatta at home, Saturday and Sunday at Youth Sailing Virginia. We race for them.

Meet the Webbs.
This weekend we race the Webb/Woollum Regatta at home. The Webb half is Dr. George Webb, Dean of Science, and his wife Dr. Jane Carter Webb. They built this program.
They came to CNC in 1973 from New Orleans, bringing Tulane's sailing energy with them. Near Ratcliffe Gym (What is now Bev Vaughn Hall) they found four abandoned Ghost 13s locked to a rusty frame, left behind by a student club that had died for lack of a facility or a coach. The Bicentennial summer of 1976 gave them their opening: they took charge of the Warwick Yacht Club junior program and struck the deal that started everything. The Warwick had a facility and almost no boats. CNC had four solid boats and no facility. The next step was obvious.
In 1979, with President Jim Windsor's blessing, they stood up the Christopher Newport Sailing Association, hired Billy Hunt as the program's first coach, and built the fundraising engine that paid for boats, coaches, travel and a top-twenty national ranking. Two of their sailors went on to campaign for the U.S. Olympic Sailing Team.
The Captain’s Log spent two decades trying to explain to campus that this quiet team was beating Ivy League schools. Looking back for a 1998 alumni feature, George called the physics-and-sailing crossover on his team a coed fraternity. He wasn’t wrong — fifteen to twenty of his students were in both.
Every boat we launch this weekend traces back to that 1976 handshake, and to the volunteers George once described as nurturing the program through its adolescence.
Home regatta Saturday and Sunday at Youth Sailing Virginia. We race for them. ⛵

WE DID IT. CNU VARSITY SAILING IS BACK. ⚓

As a result of the incredible support from our alumni, donors, families, friends, and the broader sailing community, we are proud to announce CNU Varsity Coed and Women’s Sailing will return and the team will be back on the water this fall.

Our work as a Foundation has only just begun and we have a long road ahead; however, today, we celebrate the next chapter of CNU Sailing.

Thank you to everyone who shared a message, made a connection, supported the effort, donated, or simply believed.

The future of CNU Sailing is now. See you on the start line. ⛵ by @cnusailingalumni
