The second tank always happens.

Nobody plans it. Then there is a shrimp tank on the shelf under the first one, and you are pricing a second cylinder to go with it.

It does not have to go that way. A manifold block splits the outlet of one regulator, so a single cylinder can feed more than one aquarium — one refill trip, one place to set your pressure.

Two threads in this hobby, and your CO2 cylinder only carries one of them.

Refillable CO2 cylinders across most of Europe use the W21.8x14 thread. The American standard, CGA 320, still shows up here — on imported cylinders and on plenty of second-hand ones.

So before you match a regulator to a cylinder, look at the valve outlet, or ask the place that fills it. The whole system rests on getting that one joint right.

No filling station near you? Paintball and SodaStream cylinders are a way in, with the right adapter.

A carpet is less a plant choice than a CO2 choice.

Hairgrass, Monte Carlo and the rest will happily grow upward in a tank that lets them. What makes them run sideways along the substrate is light reaching the floor, flow that carries CO2 down there with it, and a level that stays the same day after day for weeks.

That is the whole trick, and most of it is patience. Set the bubble count, leave it alone, and let the runners do the work.

After a hard trim, change nothing else.

A trim is already the biggest change your tank gets all month. Take half the stems out and the aquarium is working with a fraction of the leaf it had on Saturday.

If you also raise the light, push the bubble count and swap fertiliser in the same week, you will never know which change the tank was answering.

Leave the settings where they are. Watch the drop checker for a few days — green is right, blue low, yellow high — and let the plants come back before you adjust anything.

Sunday. Five minutes. No tools.

Run a finger along the CO2 line and feel for a kink behind the cabinet. Check the bubble counter is still on the rate you set, not the rate it has drifted to. Then look at every joint where the line changes direction — that is where a slow leak starts, and a slow leak looks exactly like a tank that needs more bubbles.

Most CO2 problems are plumbing problems.

Fine mist turned into big, lazy bubbles? Your diffuser is not broken — it is blocked.

A ceramic membrane slowly fills with mineral scale and biofilm. Once it does, the gas stops being pushed through all those tiny pores and starts taking the easy path instead, and your CO2 goes to the surface rather than into the water.

A soak in a bleach-and-water solution usually brings the mist back. Never scrub the membrane.

The IAPLC 2026 final ranking lands on Saturday 10 October.

Whatever order the layouts come in, the tanks near the top share something dull: months of nobody changing anything. Same photoperiod, same bubble count, same trim day.

Nearly all of them run pressurised CO2 — and the gas is only half of it. The other half is that it ran at one steady rate for a year while the plants filled in.

Stability is the least photogenic part of aquascaping. It is also the part every winning layout is built on.

Your tank does not pearl at breakfast. It pearls at four in the afternoon.

Oxygen has to build up in the water before it comes off the leaves as bubbles, and that takes most of a photoperiod. So if you switch the lights on, look at the plants and see nothing, nothing is wrong — you are early.

Judge a planted tank at hour six, not hour one.

Pearling is not a trick. It is a receipt.

Those strings of bubbles on a leaf mean the plant is photosynthesising faster than the water can hold the oxygen — light, CO2 and nutrients all lining up at the same time.

Chase the balance, not the bubbles. The pearling follows on its own.

Where you put the diffuser matters as much as how many bubbles come out of it.

A diffuser breaks CO2 into a stream of fine bubbles, and those bubbles have to travel. In a still corner they rise straight up and leave at the surface. Set low, under the filter outflow, and the current carries them across the whole aquascape before they reach the top.

Same bubble count, far more of it reaching the plants.

Entries for the AGA International Aquascaping Contest close on Sunday 4 October.

Three days to clean the glass, let the water settle and take the photo you have been meaning to take all summer. There is a new Classic category this year for plant-heavy scapes, so the stem jungle in the corner finally has somewhere to go.

Good luck if you are entering.
