I watch the game.

When I’m on the side of the pitch, I’m not just looking at what happens.

I’m looking at why it happens.

→ Where the game is played
→ How players position themselves
→ The speed and quality of decisions
→ How players react under pressure

These are the details that tell you everything.

Not just about the game - but about the players.

Like most people, I followed the ball.
Watched the obvious moments.
Focused on outcomes.

Coaching changed that.

It forced me to slow down.
To look deeper.
To understand what’s really happening.

Not just what players do -
but why they do it.

That shift changed everything.

📍𝗖𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝗔𝗰𝗰𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿 𝗖𝗣𝗗 𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁 – 𝗤𝗣𝗥 𝗙𝗖 & 𝗩𝗜𝗔 𝗔𝗰𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗺𝘆

Last month I had the opportunity to attend the 𝗖𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝗔𝗰𝗰𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿 𝗖𝗣𝗗 𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁 at @academyqpr'𝘀 𝗧𝗦𝗚 𝗘𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 & 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗖𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗲.

The day provided an excellent opportunity to learn from experienced practitioners, connect with coaches from different environments, and reflect on what effective coaching methodology looks like in practice.

One message in particular stayed with me:

"𝗖𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘆𝗲𝗿𝘀, 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻."

Over the next two posts, I'll share some of my key learnings from the day and how I intend to apply them within my own coaching environment.

"𝗖𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘆𝗲𝗿𝘀, 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻."

The session challenged me to think more deeply about the connection between 𝗰𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗼𝘀𝗼𝗽𝗵𝘆, 𝗴𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗹, 𝗽𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻 and 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘆𝗲𝗿 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁.

Key themes included:

• Being player-centred and evidence-based
• Balancing structure with flexibility
• Developing the individual within the collective
• Playing to player strengths whilst supporting areas for development
• Translating principles into a game model and then into training practices

Learning is valuable, but only if it changes how we think and how we coach.

Learning only becomes valuable when it influences practice.

Following the @coach_temisan 𝗖𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝗔𝗰𝗰𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿 𝗖𝗣𝗗 𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁 at @academyqpr, I've been reflecting on how these ideas can shape my work at @elitelondonacademyfcofficial.

Three principles I want to continue strengthening:

🎯 𝗔𝗟𝗜𝗚𝗡
Ensure my coaching philosophy is aligned with how I design sessions and develop players.

🔍 𝗢𝗕𝗦𝗘𝗥𝗩𝗘
Lead with observation and adapt practices based on the needs of the players in front of me.

📈 𝗗𝗘𝗩𝗘𝗟𝗢𝗣
Focus on individual development within the team context and empower players to express their strengths.

A coaching methodology isn't a document to follow.

It's a framework that creates 𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁, 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗽𝘂𝗿𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗲 across everything we do.

𝗖𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿, 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝗳𝘂𝗹 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗿𝘂𝗶𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼𝗼𝗹𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗼𝘁𝗯𝗮𝗹𝗹.

The days of scribbled notes passed around on matchday are long gone.

Today’s scouts and analysts have the power to influence major recruitment decisions with data, clarity, and precision.

Clarity isn’t just preferred - it’s essential.

Clubs need to know why a player fits their system and how they complement the current squad.

Better recruitment starts with clarity - and clarity helps make the right decision.

𝗔 𝗯𝗿𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗳𝗲𝘄 𝗱𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 @leaguemanagersassociation & @league_coaches_association 𝗔𝗻𝗻𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗠𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘀 𝗮𝘁 𝗦𝘁 𝗚𝗲𝗼𝗿𝗴𝗲’𝘀 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝗸.

Huge value in hearing different coaching perspectives from @_bruno_lage_ , @darrenmooro and 𝗦𝘁𝗲𝘃𝗲 𝗠𝗰𝗖𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻, while connecting with coaches from across the game.

One idea that really stayed with me came from 𝗦𝘁𝗲𝘃𝗲 𝗠𝗰𝗖𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻’𝘀 “𝘗𝘰𝘸𝘦𝘳 𝘰𝘧 𝘛𝘩𝘳𝘦𝘦” when looking to influence a game:

• Shape
• Personnel
• Attitude

𝗦𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲. 𝗖𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿. 𝗘𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲.

Another standout insight was hearing 𝗗𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗲𝗻 𝗠𝗼𝗼𝗿𝗲 speak about understanding players’ thoughts during intervals and the importance of communication, empathy and alignment within the coaching process.

Lots of learning, reflection and ideas to take back into my own environment at @wokingfcacademy and @elitelondonacademyfcofficial and beyond. 🙌

𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘀𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗼𝗻, 𝗜 𝗺𝗮𝗱𝗲 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝗱𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁.

I became stricter on transition behaviours.

Not louder.
Stricter.

If we lost the ball and reaction time was slow, the session reset.

If body language dropped, it was addressed immediately.

If standards slipped between practices, we corrected it.

Because transitions expose mindset.

And mindset becomes identity over time.

What changed most wasn’t the activity.

It was the expectation wrapped around it.

And once the environment became clearer, the learning accelerated.

Environment drives behaviour.

Behaviour drives development.

𝗚𝗿𝗼𝘄𝘁𝗵 𝗶𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵 𝗳𝗼𝗼𝘁𝗯𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗶𝘀𝗻’𝘁 𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗮𝗿.

Two players can be the same age
but at completely different stages of development.

Some are early developers.
Some are late developers.

But too often, we judge them the same.

We reward what we see now
instead of what could come later.

And that’s where mistakes happen.

Players get overlooked.
Opportunities are missed.

As coaches, our role is to understand growth -
not just performance.

To support development over time.

Not just outcomes in the moment.

Save this if you work with young players.

Earlier this season, I stopped a session too quickly.

I solved a problem the players hadn’t fully explored.

The design was right.
The intention was right.

But my discomfort with temporary chaos overruled the learning opportunity.

That was a valuable reminder.

In academy environments, restraint is often the separator.

Players need time to struggle, search and adapt.

Since then, I’ve become far more deliberate about:
- Letting repetitions play out
- Allowing mistakes to breathe
- Intervening only when clarity genuinely drops

Because not every silence needs filling.

Sometimes the best intervention is patience.

Development is rarely tidy.
