There’s a difference between opportunity and alignment.

Over the last couple months, I’ve had so many conversations. I’ve considered lots of possibilities and spent more time in prayer than almost any other point in my career.

I wasn’t simply looking for another position. I was seeking clarity, purpose, and connection.

I’ve learned that not every opportunity fits your assignment. Some doors are meant to test your discernment. Others are meant to reveal your priorities. The right door brings peace, not because it’s easy, but because it reflects who God created you to be.

What makes this next chapter special isn’t just the position. It’s the people I’m reconnecting with, the purpose, the community, and the incredible vision of the leadership.

It’s former players joining the journey. It’s former staff members reuniting to serve young people together again. Relationships built over years that continue to stand the test of time.

There is a familiarity here.
A trust. A shared purpose.

In many ways, it feels like home again.

And sometimes, the right path isn’t the one that makes the most sense on paper or even the most money—it’s the one that brings peace to your spirit.

This feels right.

As I reflected on the journey, I kept coming back to something I’ve known to be true for a long time: people are always more significant than places. In many ways, people create the place. They develop the environment.

After a brief hiatus, God is bringing me back to my second home to Long Beach, North Long Beach to be exact.

Not because it was my plan.

Because it was His.

His timing.
His purpose.
His alignment.

Thank you to the Lord above for creating an unexpected, but incredible opportunity.
Extra special thanks to President Conley, Andy Fee, and Coach Monson for not only believing in me, but for taking a chance on me.

I’m grateful to the administration, support staff, Long Beach campus community, and university as a whole for embracing me with open arms these past two years.
This was a tremendous professional and personal growth experience.

Big thanks to Coach Scholl, Coach Q and Coach Manfredi for being in the trenches together. Winning a Big West Conference championship in our first year together was dope!

Most of all, I’ll cherish the relationships with the student-athletes. The connection we built in a short time will not only continue, but will grow. I know I’m not always the easiest to play for, but the love and respect is always reciprocated. If it gets too quiet or boring without me, you can always knock out some push ups, bleachers or a slide lol 😂

God speed to you all and I wish each of you continued success in your journey.

Humbled and grateful to be selected by the @drewleague as one of its top players in their 50 year history. For lots of guys like me, the Drew was our “NBA” but in the community. Their presence still humbles me.

The relationships will always trump the location.

We’ve impacted a lotta lives for a lotta years.

What they don’t understand is that they’ve impacted mine even more.

Sitting on the bench, showing up at games and practices, talking to our guys, praying with them, leading Bible studies… pouring into young men they didn’t even know before walking into the gym. Sharing their experiences and how they made it. How they still trusted and listened when it was hard….

They don’t come back because they have to.
They come back because they believe in the system.
They believe in what we build.
And more importantly, they believe in who we build.

As a coach, there aren’t many things that make me more proud than watching former players embrace the next group like it’s their own.

That’s when you really know it’s bigger than basketball.

Different school.
Different players.
Same standard.
Same purpose.

The relationships remain.
Three decades and counting…..

Some positive moments and some moments of learning and growing this past weekend in Las Vegas at The Border League. That’s part of the process.

A lot of “firsts” for J-Town and experiences our young men can build on.

We competed, we learned, and we grew.

Grateful for the opportunity. Now we take the lessons, get back to work and keep building.

We’re building more than a basketball program on the North Side.

We’re building a brotherhood of young men with purpose, character, discipline, and vision.

Grateful to have University of New Mexico @unmlobombb assistant coach Michael Wilder and the LA Clippers team pastor Larry Williams also of @next2get_ spend time with our guys this week, pouring into them and talking about PURPOSE — who you are, what you stand for, and who you’re becoming.

Basketball may open the door, but what we’re building goes far beyond the game.

This is the standard.
This is the culture.
This is J Town Hoops. 🐾💙🖤🏀

Man, how time flies.
Our relationship has long surpassed father and son. 21 years ago I got a built in best friend. So many amazing adventures. We’ve laughed until we couldn’t breathe, celebrated countless wins and created so many memories that I’ll cherish forever. More than anything, I’m proud of the man that you’re becoming.

As you step into this new chapter of young adulthood, my prayer is that you continue to seek God first. Never forget who you are Whose you are, and the purpose He has for your life.
I know you’re gonna be mad at the last video but you still can’t beat me up 🤷🏽‍♂️😂😂
