Congratulations to Hayden Pfeifer on her commitment to continue her academic and softball career at Illinois State University! I’ve been blessed to be a part of Hayden’s journey since she was 10! So happy for Hayden and her family! Thank you to Lisa and Keith for believing in me and the process!!

🥎 CHANGE-UPS: STOP OVERCOMPLICATING THEM!

You don’t need crazy grips, bent fingers, or knuckles to throw an effective change-up.

You need to understand how energy is transferred into a softball — and more importantly, how to take that energy away.

🔥 TO THROW HARD:

Your arm needs to WHIP!

Your hand needs to be BEHIND the ball at release, around the 6 o’clock position, strong and stacked, right at your hip.

That’s how we efficiently transfer energy into the softball and create velocity.

🧠 TO TAKE SPEED OFF:

You have to BREAK THE WHIP!

✅ Change the position of the hand so it’s ON TOP of the ball, with the thumb to the inside at release.

✅ Understand that it’s much harder to transfer energy into something when you’re on top of it rather than behind it.

✅ Finally, come OFF the ball and create SPIN!

It’s not about finding some magical grip. It’s about understanding how to manipulate energy transfer.

Too many pitchers spend their time searching for the perfect change-up grip when they should be learning how to control the energy they put into the ball.

Watch the video and pay attention to the hand position, release, and how the ball comes off the fingers.

The goal isn’t to make the motion complicated. It’s to make the result effective. Remember “It’s a fastball until it isn’t.”

Jay and Ken are excited for this latest episode as they share their conversation with Leslie Huntington, longtime softball head coach at the University of Wisconsin - Eau Claire. Coach Huntington talks about her collegiate career playing for both a national title in softball and in the Elite Eight for basketball, her early days of coaching, how she got started on a 26-year career at Eau Claire that includes more than 600 wins and a DIII national title in 2008, and why she loves the DIII level. She also shares some of the things high school players need to know about college softball that aren’t in the recruiting materials, some of the qualities she looks for in recruits, her thoughts on the effect the transfer portal is having on college softball, and what it’s like to be a National Fastpitch Coaches Association - NFCA Hall of Famer. It’s a fun conversation so give it a listen and like, and then share it with someone else who will enjoy it too.

So tired of hearing a Riseball can’t rise unless you throw it over 55 mph. In other words you have no idea what a spin axis is. Sara here is working on her off speed Riseball with a pretty pure spin axis, high revolutions, and a positive vertical break all at 49-52 mph. IYKYK! Match this with her regular Riseball at 60-61 and change at 44 and we can keep hitters off balance very well! Still work to do, but we will get there!! by @coach_bolden

This week Jay and Ken try something a little different, talking to a coach and one of her star players on a variety of topics, including the transfer portal and why the player didn’t even think about entering it. The coach is Hallie Blackney, head coach at @moso_softball , and the player Bailey Dillon. This dynamic duo also weighs in on a variety of other topics, including their use of motor preferences to improve player performance, how the team has embraced the concept of Mudita (sharing their joy in the success of others), the problem with the D1 or bust mentality, and the idea that the athletes write the lineup with the way they work and perform in practice.
