My name is Matthew Chavez. I am grateful to say I have played this game of baseball for 20 years of my life. I played baseball from 2018–2021 at Grand Terrace High School. From 2021–2023, I attended Chaffey College, where we became Conference Champions and I earned a Gold Glove at the catcher position.

From 2023–2026, I committed to and transferred to Division 1 California Baptist University, where I became a two-year starter and earned All-WAC Defensive Team honors.

I take pride in my defensive abilities and I’m excited to pass my knowledge, experience, and passion for baseball on to the next generation of catchers and players.

Jesse came in during the first week of June with one goal: to get better. Since day one, he’s been consistent, coachable, and committed to the process. He has completely bought into developing the fundamentals of receiving, blocking, and throwing, and the results speak for themselves. His growth over the past few months has been tremendous, and it’s been awesome to watch his confidence continue to grow. Hard work and consistency always pay off.

Building a strong foundation is one of the most important parts of developing young catchers. That’s why having a daily routine matters. In this session, we worked through our progression drills that should become part of every catcher’s everyday routine because they develop every area of the position. The players who improve the most are the ones who stay consistent with the little things.

So here’s my question for you: Do you have a routine that you stick to every day?

Remember, your preparation builds your confidence. The more prepared you are, the more confident you’ll be when it’s time to compete. Success isn’t built on game day it’s built through the work you put in every single day.

One month into his catching journey with zero catching experience before this and he’s completely bought into the process of becoming a great receiver.

From mastering the fundamentals to countless reps on the machine, he’s put in the work every single day.

Today we focused on staying patient, creating a good pre-pitch load, and working underneath the baseball to attack the bottom of the ball. Our glove path is under the ball, then up and through. Maintaining strong posture, loading before the pitch, and keeping the eyes below the baseball has helped him attack the ball more aggressively and receive it with confidence.

Patience is everything. Let the ball travel to you. You see here the ball is in the air already and he is waiting for the right time to attach the ball. Reaching out or stabbing at the ball creates weak receiving and unnecessary double movement. Umpires notice that. A smooth, fluid movement through the baseball is what consistently earns strikes.

Success doesn’t happen overnight. It takes hard work, dedication, buy-in, repetition, and discipline. The work you put in is the result you get out.

The game of baseball has continued to evolve over the years. While the game itself is still played the same way, one area that has changed a lot is receiving behind the plate. To play at a high level, catchers have to adapt with the game. You can’t keep doing things the way they were done years ago if they are no longer effective.

In the past, catchers were taught to simply catch the ball and stick it. Today, receiving is much more than that. Catchers need good posture, a strong pre-pitch load, and the ability to work underneath the baseball and attack it with intent. The goal is to present every pitch as a strike and give the umpire the best look possible for that.

In clip one, you see Yadier Molina, one of the greatest catchers in baseball, receive a low-and-away pitch that is called a ball due to just catching and sticking. In clip two, you see Patrick Bailey work up and through that same low-and-away pitch with intent, presenting it back into the strike zone and earning a strike call.

As catchers, our job is to help our pitchers get as many strikes as possible. Every pitch near the zone should be presented as a strike. The better we can present the baseball, the better chance we give our pitcher to get the call.

Now let me ask you this: what’s better for your pitcher—a strike call or a ball call? by @coachchavey

Here is starting catcher Carson Tinney a Junior from the University of Texas. He does an excellent job of demonstrating high-level receiving skills at the Division I level in the SEC

On this pitch, Tinney knows a curveball is coming and prepares himself with a great pre-pitch load. His body is loaded and ready to move, allowing him to attack the bottom of the baseball aggressively while presenting the pitch as a strike. Even though the pitch finishes below the hitter’s knees, he stays underneath the ball and works it back into the strike zone with strong glove presentation.

Notice how patient he is. He sits back and lets the curveball travel to him instead of reaching for it. This allows him to receive the pitch cleanly and maximize the chance of getting a strike call.

What started the entire sequence was his pre-pitch load. Great receiving begins before the ball is thrown. A strong pre-pitch load creates proper timing, puts the catcher in an athletic position, and allows him to react efficiently to any pitch location. Because of his preparation and presentation, he helps turn the count from 0-1 to 0-2, giving his pitcher a significant advantage. by @coachchavey

As a catcher, receiving starts with your setup and approach to the ball. Your pre-pitch load is one of the most important parts of receiving because it prepares you to attack the pitch aggressively, but under control.

In this clip, you can see an exaggerated pre-pitch load with aggressive movement toward the ball. Training exaggerated movements helps improve reaction time, body control, and presentation during game situations.

If you’re loaded and prepared for a tough pitch, you give yourself the best opportunity to receive it cleanly and present it as a strike to help your pitcher. by @coachchavey
