Find shade, a King’s lisp and a guy named “The Pistol”. Barcelona!

If Miami and Rome had a baby that went to charm school, you would get Barcelona. History, architecture, scooters everywhere, the Mediterranean, the heat, independent local shops filling every street, and the best walkable neighborhoods on earth. Urban planning at its absolute finest.

You can’t see Barcelona in 24hrs, but we tried, logging 30,000 steps. This is where the urban planning comes in, we never stopped and waited for a stoplight. Just a consistent rythym of walking with the green man, espresso, and bakery’s fueling our travel thru one incredible neighborhood after another.

Barcelona is what shared urban life can be, using closed streets, heavy tree canopies for shade to cool the city and its citizens, thoughtful designed social housing for seniors, almost no chain stores, environmental responsibility thru shared recycling efforts, and public squares for interactions…like celebrating Spain’s semifinal win in the World Cup last night. Go Espana!

Neighborhoods like the El Raval, the Gothic Quarter and Eixample filled with juliet balconies on nearly every facade to Gaudi’s masterpieces to the breathtaking Basilica Sagrada Familia. The architecture of Barcelona is breathtaking, simply the most beautiful city I’ve ever seen!

The King’s lisp comes from King Ferdinand having a lisp that people of the Catalonian region copy to this day. It’s an urban myth that is not true but makes for a good story and speaks to the strong independent streak of this region.

Happy Mother’s Day to all the women in our lives! Special thanks to my Mom, who “helped” me with my AP history term paper, always showed up yo our games, to constantly giving me great advice like “you will never make a living in basketball!”
