What happens when a child refuses to let prison walls, addiction, family pain, or the pressure around her decide who she will become?
Keep Shooting tells the story of Iyunna “Yana” Battle, a gifted young basketball player growing up on Atlanta’s Southside with her father behind bars and her mother fighting addiction. With a basketball in her hands, faith in her heart, and people in her community willing to stand behind her, Yana refuses to be broken.
She isn’t trying to escape where she comes from. She is fighting to become somebody from it—the strength her family needs and the spark behind a miracle that could give someone a second chance.
The ideas behind this book have lived in me for years—at least three to five, and probably longer. I finally reached the right time and space to put those ideas on paper and get this story published. I am incredibly proud and excited to finally share it with the world.
Keep Shooting is inspired by true experiences and observations gathered through more than 30 years around basketball—as a player, coach, parent, fan, and educator. It is shaped by my Atlanta roots, my background in psychology and education, my experiences as a father of girls, and the lessons I have learned from players, parents, coaches, families, and communities.
Faith is at the heart of this story, and basketball is its language—but its message belongs to everybody. No matter your age, race, background, faith, or circumstances, I hope this book reminds you that when life knocks you down, you can learn from the miss, make the adjustment, and take the next shot.
Keep Shooting, written by Edward Howard Benton II—Coach E—is available now in paperback and Kindle on Amazon. Tap the link in my bio or scan the QR code at the end of the Reel. For physical copies directly from me, send me a DM.
Every miss is a lesson. Keep shooting. 🏀🙏🏾

26 Years Later 🏀🕰️
I honestly can’t put into words what it felt like seeing this footage for the FIRST TIME in 26 YEARS. 😳
These are highlights from South Atlanta High School vs. Westlake and South Atlanta vs. Therrell, back in 1998–99. I’m #15.
South Atlanta, Grady, Mays, Maynard Jackson (old Southside), Washington, Carver, Harper-Archer, Therrell, Westlake… man, this brings back SO MANY memories of Atlanta high school basketball. 🏀🔥
And the crazy part? Legendary Coach Michael Reddick, who retired from South Atlanta, kept these tapes all these years. Coach Reddick, I can’t thank you enough for holding on to a piece of my childhood that I thought was gone forever. 🙏🏾
Watching this took me right back to being a young kid with nothing but a basketball, a dream, and a whole lot of love for the game.
26 years later, I finally get to see that kid again. ❤️🏀
I just wish I had MORE of these tapes. 😭

BASKETBALL IS BIGGER THAN THE GAME. 🏀❤️
Some experiences remind you that what you’re doing is bigger than yourself. Today was one of those experiences.
I had the opportunity to spend time with the incredible young women of the Global Village Project—girls who came to Atlanta as refugees and are building new lives, pursuing their education, finding their voices, and creating new dreams. Their strength, energy, smiles, and resilience truly touched my soul.
It reminded me of something I’ve always believed:
Basketball is a bridge.
A bridge that allows us to connect with people, open doors, build relationships, create opportunities, and reach people we may have never crossed paths with otherwise. But basketball isn’t the destination.
PURPOSE IS.
Being from Atlanta makes this experience even more meaningful. This is home. I know what it means to have a community pour into you, believe in you, and help shape who you become. Now, being blessed with opportunities to pour back into my community means more to me than I can put into words.
My faith has taught me that every gift comes with a responsibility to give back. I’m grateful that God has allowed me to use the game I love as a platform to serve, inspire, encourage, and make an impact beyond the court.
A special thank you to Morgan Shaw Parker, President & COO of the Atlanta Dream, for her leadership, vision, and commitment to this Atlanta community. And thank you to @AtlantaDream, @Albert, and @GlobalVillageProject for creating opportunities where basketball becomes something bigger—a connection, a conversation, a smile, an opportunity, and maybe even the beginning of a new dream.
Basketball may bring us together, but PURPOSE keeps us connected.
I’m grateful for this journey. Grateful for Atlanta. Grateful for the game that changed my life. And grateful that I can now use that same game to touch the lives of others.
THIS IS BIGGER THAN BASKETBALL.
THIS IS ABOUT PEOPLE.
THIS IS ABOUT PURPOSE.
THIS IS ABOUT IMPACT. 🙏🏾🏀❤️

This summer, girls across Metro Atlanta stepped onto our courts to build skills, confidence, and community through the Atlanta Dream’s Power Her Dreams Clinics. 🏀

Through basketball, these clinics helped grow the game while empowering girls with the confidence and leadership skills they can carry beyond the court.

On International Youth Day, we’re proud to celebrate these young athletes and all the young people finding their voice, building their confidence, and shaping what comes next.

A sincere thank you to the @atlantadream, @coachebcoaching, and everyone who helped bring these clinics to our Wade Walker Park, J.M. Tull-Gwinnett, McCleskey-East Cobb, and Robert D. Fowler Family YMCAs.

Here’s to the next generation of leaders, on and off the court. 💙 taken in Wade Walker Park Family YMCA by @coachebcoaching

Grateful for the opportunity to spend time with the amazing young ladies at the Global Village Project. 💙🏀
Basketball is so much bigger than wins and losses. It’s about building confidence, creating connections, and reminding people that they matter.
These young women have come from different countries and different walks of life, but today we all spoke the same language—the game of basketball.
This experience reminded me to never take life’s blessings for granted. We all have the ability to make a difference in someone’s life. It doesn’t always take money or grand gestures. Sometimes it just takes your time, your encouragement, and a willingness to serve.
Thank you, Global Village Project, for allowing me to be a small part of something so meaningful. And thank you to the Atlanta Dream for continuing to create opportunities to impact our communities through the game we all love.
Let’s never be too busy or too successful to reach back and help someone else. That’s what real leadership is all about. ❤️

Stop teaching players to catch and immediately dribble. Teach them to catch and READ. 🧠🏀
One of the biggest mistakes young players make is wasting their dribble before they’ve gathered information.
When you catch the ball, your first question shouldn’t be, “Where do I dribble?”
It should be:
Can I shoot it?
If you’re open and you’re in your range... SHOOT THE BALL.
I tell my players all the time:
Take the shot. Make the shot.
Even if you’re not a great shooter yet, defenders have to respect a player who’s willing to shoot. Once they respect the shot, the game opens up.
➡️ First catch: Shoot it.
Now the defender knows they have to close out.
➡️ Next catch: Shot fake.
Aggressive closeout? Let them fly by. Attack the rim.
➡️ Next catch: Shot fake... they stay down.
Now shoot over the top because they’re worried about your drive.
➡️ Now your jab step becomes dangerous.
Jab right—they react.
Cross jab—they react.
Rip through.
Sweep.
Attack either direction.
Every shot, shot fake, jab, pivot, and pass fake creates another scoring option...
...and you still haven’t used your dribble.
The dribble should be your last option, not your first.
Great scorers don’t just have a “bag.”
They have reads.
Teach players to win the possession before the first dribble, and you’ll create smarter, more efficient basketball players.
🏀 Don’t waste your dribble. Make the defense move first.

They can overlook the work, ignore the progress, and hesitate to give me my credit—but they can’t stop what God has already ordained.
I don’t need validation from people when my purpose comes from God. Every gym, every late night, every sacrifice, every “no” has been preparing me for moments like this.
From coaching with the Atlanta Dream to representing at WNBA All-Star Weekend, this is only the beginning. Bigger things are coming, and I’m just getting started.
I’m staying humble, staying hungry, and letting my work speak louder than opinions.
God’s timing. God’s favor. God’s plan. 💯🙏🏾
