I remember telling John Salley when he was 15 years old, as his Coach with the Ditmas Allstars that he and I would someday in his adult life will become friends and brothers, he couldn’t imagine that, well today and for the past 10 years he has been not only a friend, but my Health & Wellness Coach! You may be asking, “Coach, what are you doing with your grandson’s graduation robe on?”

Well… this was more than a robe.

This was a one moment in time that I could not let pass me by.

I did not participate in my junior high school, high school, or college graduations. Why? Because at that time, I felt like there was no one there to truly celebrate my accomplishments. My mindset was, “Just give me my diploma and I’m out.” SMDH.

But God gave me another moment.

So when my amazing, brilliant grandson graduated from high school, I made it my business to be fully present — not just in the building, but in the moment, in the joy, in the celebration, and in the love.

This time, my entire family was there.

This robe represented more than graduation. It represented healing. It represented legacy. It represented what I missed, what I survived, and what my grandson now gets to experience with a family standing proudly behind him.

Sometimes life gives you a chance to celebrate through the next generation what you were not able to fully celebrate for yourself.

Congratulations, Grandson. You didn’t just walk across that stage for yourself — you carried all of us with you.
