During our Mental Skills program this year we are talking a lot about our ability to change our brains (Neuroplasticity Baby!!) We have the control over our thoughts and it takes practice to train your brain to look for the positive and find things to be grateful for. The more you catch yourself slipping into the BCDs (Blame, Complain, Defend) and reframe your thoughts the better your brain will get at finding the good.
A couple practical strategies you can try:
1. Mindfulness. The more you practice judgement free noticing the better you get at it.
2. Morning Gratitude. Start with 3 things and a deep breath before you get up.
3. Daily Glimmers. At the end of the day list 3-5 things you can give yourself credit for.

Trigger warning: Suicide
September is Suicide awareness month. Mental health awareness and promotion is dear to my heart as an Occupational Therapist, Coach, and someone who lost a best friend to mental illness.
So today I just wanted to remind you to please check on those around you. Your friends, family, teammates, the classmates you see sitting alone and the ones that always seem happy.
Asking how someone is doing and letting them know that they are not alone can save someone’s life.
And if you are struggling please know there is nothing wrong with you, so many people go through it at some point in life and it is so important to let someone know you need help!!
You can text or call 988 for confidential help anytime. There are so many great options for counseling and therapy on-line or in person. You can reach out to a friend, teacher, coach, family member and just say you’re struggling. Let’s help each other!

And just like that this little guy is off to college. I’m glad he’s close but at the same time it feels so far. There’s just no way to prepare for the leaving. A piece of your heart goes with them and you just learn to go on without it because nothing can take it’s place.
He’s ready. I’m not. That’s parenting.

I’ve decided to take a much needed break from social media for the rest of the summer. Coaches and their families sacrifice a lot of time together for the demands of coaching. With another son leaving for college and some feelings of burnout I have decided to reclaim some time for the rest of the summer. My goal is to read 10 books and really be present with my family. I do plan on checking my email once in awhile so you can contact me here:

Happy 19th Birthday to my Miles of Smiles!! It is so much fun being your mom!! You make me laugh, give me the best hugs, and you make me so proud watching all that you have accomplished! I know you will also make me slightly nervous with your adventures ahead but I am also so excited for you and I know you’re ready.
