If you know me, you know that I have been fascinated by Bruno Catalano’s sculptures for years. Seeing one in real life had been a dream of mine for a long time. So when I walked into an art gallery in St. Tropez last week and unexpectedly spotted several of his sculptures, I felt like a child in a candy store. I couldn’t stop smiling.

Then the gallery owner told me that one of his large-scale “Voyageurs” was just around the corner. Standing in front of it a little later, I was reminded why art can sometimes say what words cannot. His sculptures capture something I have seen in myself and in the lives of so many expats and people living between worlds: the feeling that parts of us can get lost somewhere along the journey. And yet, despite the missing pieces, the figures are still standing. Fragile and strong at the same time.

To me, that is the beauty and complexity of living abroad. There can be grief, identity shifts, loneliness, and confusion. But there is also resilience, growth, meaningful new connections and the quiet possibility of finding our way back to ourselves. Maybe that is what being a voyageur really means: allowing yourself to be changed by the journey without losing who you are.

And the most important message remains the same: realizing that we are not alone in this.

I’m curious: Is there a book, quote, artwork, or piece of music that captures the expat experience for you? by @coaching_because

“Are you happy?”
Such a simple question and yet it changed everything for me.
I’m so grateful to be featured in Executives Diary Magazine, where I share more about my journey, living abroad, and how it led me to become a coach for expatriates.
Living in different countries taught me that growth often starts with one honest question.
If you’re navigating life abroad or a big transition, you’re not alone.

We often think moving abroad changes where we live, but often, it changes how we see ourselves. In my latest conversation with @mamaaudraofficial, we talk about what happens when the identity you've built over many years no longer feels like you.

Before moving abroad, Audra's life was deeply rooted in the Mormon faith. It shaped her beliefs, her community, and how she saw herself as a woman and a mother.

It wasn't until she had spent years living in different countries, surrounded by people with completely different worldviews, that she gained enough distance to look at her own life with fresh eyes. Not because living abroad gave her the answers, but because it gave her permission to ask different questions.

Although Audra's story is unique, I think the experience is surprisingly universal. Many of us have reached a point where we've asked ourselves: Does this still fit? Whether that's a career, a relationship, a community, or simply the person we've always believed ourselves to be. That's what this episode is really about.

This thought from my recent conversation with @halloguide.annette (link in bio) really stayed with me: “If we were back home, everything would be easier.” But would it?

Living abroad has a unique way of making our challenges more visible. We notice the loneliness, the uncertainty, the identity shifts, the struggles our children face, or the difficulty of building a new community.

And it is very easy to believe: “Things would be different if we were back.”
Sometimes they would, but sometimes we would simply be facing the same human challenges in a more familiar environment.
The grass is not always greener on the other side. Sometimes we just see the other side more clearly when we are far away.

What challenges have you noticed are not actually “expat problems” but human problems that became more visible abroad? by @coaching_because

It's okay to feel grief. You're grieving a lost lifestyle and person. This is called disenfranchised grief because it's not publicly acknowledged. Find creative ways to express it, then let it go to move forward. #GriefJourney #EmotionalWellness #MentalHealthMatters #SelfCare #HealingJourney #CopingSkills #MovingForward #LifeTransitions #Authenticity #ReelsOfInstagram by @coaching_because

“You are seen as the luxury expat spouse… you don’t have to care about anything. You cannot have any issues..”
That was one of the reflections @halloguide.annette shared in our conversation.

When you move abroad as a couple without children, you can find yourself in a space that is rarely visible. Not part of the “working expat women” identity. Not part of the parenting community that naturally forms through daily life. Somewhere in between. Present but not automatically placed anywhere.

In this episode, Annette shares her experience of almost a decade abroad across Mexico, the US, and Hungary. We talk about identity, belonging, and what it means to rebuild structure and meaning again and again.
