Have you already given up?

Are you still reading this? If so, why? What’s that feeling you’ve got?

Some people revel in the misfortune of others – for me, it’s joy. I love the idea of freudenfreude, but it’s been a journey to truly live it.

In 2013, I graduated from Sheffield with an English Lit degree and no clue what to do. So I ran. First to Australia, then Berlin. Southeast Asia was the plan, but a creative opportunity came up, and suddenly I was writing every day and living a nightlife that totally burnt me out.

By 2014, I returned to England with yellow hair and no next step. In 2015, I admitted I was clinically depressed and applied for a master’s in psychology. I spent months building the motivation to leave the house, moved into student halls, learned to cook, and got a gym membership.

At first, I struggled to study but slowly, with regular meals and workouts – even hosting the town’s biggest pub quiz – I started to feel again. I smashed my essays, landed a marketing job and began performing - just me, poetry and a drum machine before everything closed.

My then partner lost her period through undereating and overtraining, trying to look a way that she thought she should. Her confidence was shattered. And I herniated a disc as we were moving flats. In the stillness of deserted central London, I knew: if we weren’t right for ourselves, we couldn’t be right for anyone else.

In 2022, I trained with a coach for the first time. I let go of my ego, gained experience, and learnt what it meant to workout and recover properly. I was made redundant from an account diector role and began working with a business mentor to make coaching my focus - between PureGym and online clients.

In 2024, the business and I were both ready for digital nomad life in Southeast Asia. The food, people, landscapes were amazing; the constant travel, rainy seasons and dodgy WiFi tested me. I committed to the planned six months and grew a lot, learning from the lows and the highs.

Now I’m back in the UK and in my groove - training, baking my donuts (and eating them!) and helping people smash their fitness goals, from gamechanging fat loss to feeling like themselves through sport and community.

Together, we’re taking up space and building something to be proud of. Are you in? by @coachjackmann

Hot take: The fitness industry is OBSESSED with beginners.

But what happens after that first year? When the newbie gains dry up and you’re stuck in no-man’s-land?

Do you stick to the same routines? Do you buy another basic influecer programme with a different name?

I’ve got an MSc in Psychology and a Level 4 in Strength & Conditioning. I work with people who have a taste for the work andthe results. Who know what progressive overload is and don’t lie to themselves about calorie deficits. People in the prime of their lives who have hit a wall and need someone to help them break through it.

You’re not a beginner anymore. Stop training like one.

My job isn’t to teach you how to squat. It’s to help you figure out what you’re squatting FOR – and then build a plan that actually gets you there.

Athletes often look aesthetic, but they’re going to eat to fuel that - and unless they’re sprinters - probably don’t have the peaches you know and love and want on social media.

Bodybuilders have that shape and conditioning but rarely have the strength or fitness you’d expect for the look.

If you want aesthetics or athletics in the shortest timeframe possible, pick one and commit. If you want both, give yourself longer to achieve them.

In 2026, my mantra is:
One target. Full commitment.

If you’ve been training for a year+ and you’re ready to stop guessing on how to build your engine or your dumptruck, then let’s talk.

It doesn’t have to be a sport, it could be a project or a business, or even a relationship

If it makes you think and it makes you work and it helps you to be a better person - wiser, stronger, kinder, more robust - then commit to it

Do it when it’s tough, do it because it’s tough, so that, when it’s time to do anything else you already know what it’s like to be challenged and to overcome.

And if you don’t trust yourself just yet - to win, to fail, to get back up again - give me a shout. I’ve got coaching spaces available.

Big shout to the runners, the supporters and the volunteers at @robinhood_half yesterday. Walking along the embankment you’d have no idea today but anyone who was there yesterday will know just how big and meaningful an event it was. by @coachjackmann

This was the week that made that

Lots of podcast prep, this for @alexa_ryan on @fitnessandthinking while, naturally, still paying the price for one two many Guinness the weekend before

Hyrox crew turning up!

You want some do ya?

Standing calf raises might grow more muscle, but I feel both like a better runner when I do them seated and that they actually look better for it too?

Ask @finley.mott for a mocha 🤌

Sunsets along this stretch
of river help me to feel
like this is the place
for me, for now

Been a big week of collabs! Took Roxie out to see a life coach about a crossover, a physio about joint programming, all the while feeling very new bag, new semseter. Check the link up top if you like mine to support my page and get a lovely chunk off yours!

The light was a paid actor on this @the.movementuk run yesterday

Everybody thinks it’s about the finish line
(And hey, don’t get me wrong, I’m proud of my time 👉)
Often forgetting what it took to get to this point
And how many of us - for whatever reason - won’t, can’t or don’t

What a way to spend a Sunday
Big up everyone who made the effort today
To run, to cheer, to carry each other through 🙌
@robinhood_half

This was my first time running with a metronome
Trying to keep my rhythm and reduce my overstriding
There were some moments where I felt like I was flying
All while keeping that 1,2,3,4
This step, this breath
Being present in the moment feeling going

Can still whip those knees through, @johnny_wilson5 I know! but from hobbling after long runs to PBing today, the feeling in my lower legs during and after is night and day, so I wanted to shout out your guidance here.

Bobby! First race and a huge PB - maaan I wish I’d caught up to you sooner but seeing you tear it up over the last mile was big motivation. You smashed it lad!

Gun time: 01:40
Chip time: 01:35
Strava HM time: 👀

Big lessons learned:
1. give yourself longer than you think you need for the loo queue - I was lucky to start on time
2. be honest with yourself for pacing and back your starting position - hey, I was sad I didn’t get to start with the boys but the experience of catching up to them and using the energy of the crowd and t by @coachjackmann

Too many people base their sense of selves on what the scales say.

Too few people actually know inherently or intuitively how to safely impact that number and then how to let it go.

You can drive a car, it doesn’t mean you know how internal combustion works. To be fair there are plenty of smart people who are terrible drivers too…

Give me 80 seconds and I could shave years of misery from your life.

And if you’d like to become a better driver of your body, message me to chat about coaching. by @coachjackmann

There is always going to be an element of safety when it comes to getting your steps in

And as the equinox and autumn roll around, longer, darker nights can make getting your steps in less desirable

Knowing how much of a difference steps make to mood, energy and body composition though, if you have body goals and want to be anyway a healthy person, I don’t think you should stop moving because of the time of year

Whether you find a supermarket or shopping mall or treadmill or even walking or running group, your pedometer and coach won’t mind - safe steps (and their equivalents) are a sustainable name of the game

Where would you recommend people go as it gets colder, darker, icier? by @coachjackmann

Should I be using lifting straps? Can you show me how you use them?

So far this week - and bear in mind it’s Tuesday - I’ve had a big dog coach and a six-month-in lifter ask me the same questions.

And the answer is, yeah, probably.

Should everyone use lifting straps then?

Maybe! Maybe not!

Both are athletes who’ve worked on lifts for a solid block who both have strength goals (the new lifter has aesthetic goals too) and have hit plateaus in their numbers.

Does someone brand new to the gym need straps? Likely no. They may need to learn how to work on the exercise longer so we can rule out poor form, forearm weakness, joint instability etc first.

Can I show you how to use them - for sure!
Whether it’s pull-ups, deadlifts, shrugs, rows, hip extensions, even some lateral raises - I think they have great utility for folk wanting to build shape through through their posterior chains.

Just shout with the exercise and we can go through it together. by @coachjackmann

I covered 60km in running, walking and enforced hiking this week - here’s some of what I saw!

One does not simply add distance to a Sheffield run.

This route was NSFE (not safe for road Evo SLs) - five miles in and ready to turn the burners on…and it was wet roots and mud. Ah.

Three reservoirs hit, loads of sounds, and a tuna pasta bake and a bath at the end of it - I think we can still call it a productive session even if it wasn’t plan optimal!

What’s your fave route on or off road? Why? by @coachjackmann

How about backwards running forwards?
Bit of a giggle post Hyrox - unless you’re in a TENET sequel, I’m not sure when you’ll use it but I reckon there was a natural or two in the group…
