Aiden Ruiz and Jason DeCaro are going to get to know each other quite well soon. Yesterday, the two Long Island ballplayers were both drafted, just one round apart, by the Pittsburgh Pirates. (Video credits: @coachjonbrewer & @gnac22)

Jon Brewer, Ruiz’s head coach at The Stony Brook School, is confident that Pittsburgh made the right choices with both players.

“DeCaro’s a fantastic player, too,” Brewer told me on Saturday. “I’ll tell you what: the Pirates have had a hell of a draft.”

Brewer believes that Saturday was the start of an immortal journey for his former shortstop.

“They’re getting a starting shortstop, is what they’re getting,” Brewer said. “I’ve told every team in the major leagues over the past six months that he is a future hall of famer, and that I would put my career on it — and I truly mean that. So the Pirates just got a longtime starting shortstop, and I’m not even sure they know that yet. This kid is incredibly special, and he is the poster child that the fans are going to love there.”

Tomorrow, a dream that began with a kid who simply loved baseball has a chance to become reality.

The MLB Draft is a life-changing moment, and I couldn’t be happier for @aidenr45

What people will see is the talent. The switch-hitting ability. The defense. The tools that make him one of the top players in this year’s draft.

What I’ve been fortunate enough to see for the past four years is the person.

Aiden could have chosen to play anywhere in the country…..at anytime…Instead, he believed in our vision, believed in our program, and chose to build something special with his teammates. That loyalty is something I’ll never forget.

No one has earned this opportunity more. The countless hours. The early mornings. The late nights. The relentless pursuit of being better. He loves the game in a way that’s impossible to teach.

But what separates Aiden isn’t just his talent, it’s his character. He’s the teammate everyone wants beside them. The player coaches trust completely. The young man who never forgets the people who helped him along the way.

For four straight years, not a holiday or special occasion has gone by without Aiden sending me a text. Those moments say far more about who he is than any stat line ever could.

No matter what happens tomorrow, you’ve already made everyone around you proud. You represented your family, your teammates, and The Stony Brook School with humility, class, and unwavering commitment.

Tomorrow, a professional organization will be gaining an exceptional baseball player if that is where you are led.

More importantly, they’ll be getting an even better person.

Proud to have been a small part of your journey. Can’t wait to watch what’s next.
