I know some business owners will disagree with me, but hear me out.

Putting only one person in your store may look like cost-saving, but it can become a costly mistake.

If you want to stay ahead, you must keep innovating, challenging the status quo, and evolving.

The market is changing. Customer needs are shifting. What worked yesterday may not work tomorrow.

Don't just compete with everyone else. Find ways to stand out, create new opportunities, and position your business in a Blue Ocean where competition is less intense.

Ask yourself: What can I do differently? What problem can I solve better? What new value can I create?

Your ideal candidate may have the skills and experience, but if they live too far from your business, commuting challenges could affect punctuality, productivity, and reliability.

Consider proximity alongside competence, experience, attitude, and suitability for the role.

Personally, I am proactive about my business and my team. No matter how good a candidate is, if they live too far from the office, I will think carefully before hiring them. Daily commuting stress can affect productivity and eventually lead to resignation.

Imagine two employees earning ₦300,000 monthly: one lives in Sango-Ota and the other in Ikeja, where the office is located. Their transportation costs, commuting time, and quality of life will be very different.

The exception? If you provide staff accommodation or have a practical commuting arrangement.

Think ahead! The right recruitment decision can help you retain good staff.

Learn to think ahead for your team before these challenges start affecting your business. Remember, when things go wrong, the consequences may affect you as the business owner more than they affect your employees.

I truly sympathise with every business owner experiencing employee theft. I can only imagine the pain of losing what you have worked so hard to build. May God strengthen you.

But please understand that business structures work! Many businesses simply have incomplete structures.

After over 20 years in business, I have learnt that having an accountant, an auditor, or CCTV is not enough. The processes, systems, industry, type of employees and implementation all matter. You must think like a thief to identify all likely loopholes and close it with checks and balancing.

I once helped a client whose business lost ₦50 million worth of goods stolen on Sundays when the business was supposed to be closed. One staff member had access to the business/store. That was a gap that needed to be fixed.

Please, don’t give up. Let’s identify the gaps in your business structure and protect what you have worked so hard to build.
