NOW PLAY.

Nine weeks of teaching leads here.

The defensive principles.
The offensive concepts.
The reads.
The decisions.
The communication.
The competition.

Week 9 puts it all into a 5-on-5 environment and asks players to do what we’ve been preparing them to do from the beginning:

Play the game.

Not waiting for a coach to give them every answer.

Understanding what they’re seeing, trusting what they’ve learned and competing together.

We develop the player first.
The team follows.

MORE TOUCHES. MORE READS. MORE GROWTH.

There’s a reason Week 8 gets smaller.

3-on-3 creates more involvement in every possession.

More touches. More space to read. More defensive responsibility. More opportunities to make decisions — and nowhere to hide.

Players have to communicate, move without the ball, recognize advantages, defend multiple actions and solve problems in real time.

Less standing.

More playing. More thinking. More learning.

PUT IT TO THE TEST.

Week 7 brings players back to their assigned teams for the first time since tryouts.

Now we get to see what transferred.

Can players communicate the same language? Recognize the same concepts? Make better decisions? Apply what they’ve learned inside a team environment?

And we’re not only evaluating the players.

We’re evaluating ourselves — our teaching, our coaches and how consistently the State 38 standard is being implemented across the program.

Development requires accountability at every level.

Players. Coaches. Program.

READ. REACT. DECIDE.

Basketball doesn’t give players a script.

Every possession presents a new problem: Where is the help? Where is the space? What did the defender take away? Where is the advantage?

Our job isn’t to make every decision for our players.

It’s to give them the tools to make those decisions themselves.

See the floor.
Recognize the advantage.
Make the read.
Make the decision.

That’s how basketball IQ is built.

LEARN TO PLAY. NOT PLAYS.

Weeks 4–6 shift the focus to offense.

But we’re not starting with a playbook.

We’re teaching players how to understand concepts, spacing, movement, screens, cuts and advantage — then recognize what the defense gives them and respond.

Because memorizing where to stand works until the play breaks down.

Understanding concepts and how to play works when the game gets unpredictable.

That’s the player we’re trying to develop.

Teach the game. Not just the play.

THIS IS HOW WE GUARD.

Defense isn’t just effort. It has to be taught.

During the first three weeks of The First Nine, State 38 players will build a shared defensive foundation — from stance and footwork to help-side positioning, rotations, communication, ball-screen defense and defending actions away from the ball.

The goal is bigger than teaching individual defensive skills.

We want every player to understand where to be, why they’re there and what happens next.

Same language. Same responsibilities. Same standard.

Great teams are built on great defense.

DEFENSE FIRST.

Weeks 1–3 of The First Nine are about establishing our defensive identity.

Not just drills. Not just effort.

Players will learn how and why we defend — stance and footwork, help-side principles, rotations, gaps, closeouts, communication, rebounding, transition defense and more.

From our youngest teams through our oldest, we want players speaking the same language and understanding the same responsibilities.

Because great defense isn’t something you install before a game.

It’s something you teach.
It’s something you build.
It’s an identity.

A NEW WAY TO DEVELOP.

For the first nine weeks, development comes before separation.

Instead of immediately breaking into individual teams, players will train primarily within grade and development-level groups 2–3 nights per week, led by our experienced coaching staff.

Why?

More consistency.
More intentional teaching.
More opportunities to develop.

Every player gets access to the same foundation and the same expectations.
Because development shouldn’t depend on which team you happen to be assigned to.

We develop the player first. The team follows.

ONE PROGRAM. ONE LANGUAGE.

One of the biggest problems in youth basketball? Players move from team to team, coach to coach and season to season — and everything changes.

We’re changing that.

At State 38 United, every player will learn the same terminology, concepts and principles from the beginning.

That means when players move between teams, coaches or levels, the foundation stays the same.

We’re not building a collection of individual teams.

We’re building one basketball program.
