Spooky 🫣🫣 @cwrucrew by @coachwebbincle

Breathtaking, chilly morning for stabilizing set in a mixed lineup with @cwrucrew.

It is hard, as coaches and as athletes, to compartmentalize when working on technique. We want to fix everything at once (the timing, the roll-ups, the set, the ratio, the handle heights, the suspension, the reach, etc). We overwhelm ourselves and fuel a rower’s biggest enemies: frustration and tension.

Most of this mixed crew were novices, but everybody took today’s workout in stride. I asked them to commit to an unfamiliar lineup by acclimating to each other with long strokes, a clean entry and exit, and big tap downs.

Bladework can be cleaned up, of course, but that’s not what I asked for today. Trusting and adapting to a lineup is as much of a muscle as early roll-ups or big twists. These athletes are putting in that work. They trusted me and one other to focus on what they needed to. They noticed the improvement and are better for it.

If you love Cleveland now, see what happens when you take a spin on our beautiful Cuyahoga 🤍 Novice Women are ready to represent CLEVELAND! at #HOTC. by @coachwebbincle

Every season, I’m amazed by the novices who readily commit mind, body, and spirit to the sport. This @cwrucrew Novice Men’s 4+ was undaunted by yesterday’s challenging 10k in the rain and cold. A month ago, most of them had never touched an oar. Now they’re keeping a foot on the gas for these final practices before their first collegiate race at #HOTC. Keep it up, Spartans! 💙💪🏼 by @coachwebbincle

Novice rowing is the ultimate trust exercise, and these CWRU novices are beginning to see it pay off. 11 days to go until #HOTC! by @coachwebbincle

All for the love of the game. Anything for the kids. by @coachwebbincle

With only 3-4 practices under their belts, this @cwrucrew’s novice women’s 8+ is looking cool and confident. I couldn’t be happier with their effort and results!

Rowing has an intimidating learning curve. These ladies are starting to see the benefit of starting slow, granting themselves patience as they learn from their mistakes, and trusting their teammates. It’s not perfect rowing, but it’s exactly the type of rowing they should be doing right now.

I am so proud of this crew’s patience, positivity, and grit. I cannot wait to see what they accomplish together. Keep it up, Spartans! by @coachwebbincle

Bittersweet to see my SRL crews dock for the final time this summer. I spent three months watching these athletes get stronger, more resilient, and more confident.

In a sport where there is so much emphasis on perfection and elite performance as the ultimate objectives, this experience is grounding. I’m reminded what really matters is present at this level just as much as any other: the journey of becoming our best selves, together.

(It doesn’t hurt that we bagged some medals in the process, either. Cheers to all my phenomenal crews for the hours put in and for remembering that fun is fast.🥇🥉💪🏻💪🏻 See you soon!) by @coachwebbincle

The most chic thing about it is that this is for everyone ✨ by @coachwebbincle

This morning’s warm-up w/ @westernreserverowing was a stunning reminder that relaxed rowing is fast rowing.

I talk about this to any rower that will listen. One of the greatest risks of this sport is how similar engagement and strain can feel. This is what makes it SO easy to grow frustrated with the feeling that your body seems to be fighting the rest of the crew.

Most of my recent practices have started with reminders for my athletes to check in with their bodies during the initial warm up and drilling. Is your core engaged, or are you straining your spine to sit tall? Are your lats connecting with your handle on the drive, or are you rolling your shoulders in their sockets? Are you allowing the boat to run under you on the recovery, or are you straining your hips and ankles to tug yourself up the slide?

Recognizing and releasing all the unnecessary tension during the warm-up allows you to isolate and activate the muscles that make the boat run more effectively. Checking in with each part of your body helps you identify what is effective vs. what could result in injury.

This crew regularly does a great job of checking in with themselves to move the shell with flexible, intentional control. Their inside shoulders are relaxed and easy to twist around, their cores support their spines and upper bodies, and they let the boat come to them. Extra tension was eliminated and it was way easier to feel the muscles engaging once they started upping the pressure and rate.

Even the warm-up is part of the journey. In rowing (and in life), remember to take a deep breath, release any tension that doesn’t move you closer to your end goal, and check in with anything that feels tight or strained. (Good sunrises and flat water help, too!) by @coachwebbincle

The journey is why we do it, and what a great journey it has been so far. These SRL ladies have put in soooo much work this season. Seeing it pay off has been 😘😘😘 by @coachwebbincle
