What a haul! Thanks to everyone who showed out yesterday to our Wineberry Wednesday foraging sessions!

We met at both 10am and 530pm and learned how to identify wineberries, their impact on native ecosystems, and how to forage safely. We picked *pounds* of berries, which will not only fill our bellies, but will slow the spread of these plants in our forests by limiting the seeds that will sprout next year.

Didn't make it? There's still plenty of wineberries out on the trails and along the bike path in Cobbs! While wineberries are pretty easy to recognize, remember to NEVER forage anything if you're not 100% sure about what it is. Feel free to stop into the center, give us a call, or send us pictures to help with identification :)

✨ Hidden gems are everywhere… if you know where to look. 🌿❤️

We found goumi berries growing at the @cobbsenvcenter 🍒 These bright red berries are edible, packed with antioxidants, and have a sweet-tart flavor that’s often compared to cherries with a hint of cranberry. 🌱

One of the best parts of getting kids outside is discovering that nature has so much to teach us. Every trail has a story. Every plant is a lesson. 💚

⚠️ Friendly reminder: Never eat wild berries unless you’ve positively identified them and know they’re safe.

Would you try a goumi berry? 👇

Have you ever tasted a "wineberry"? If not, you've probably seen them growing without even knowing they were there!

Wineberry (Rubus phoenicolasius) is a species of raspberry that is not only edible, but absolutely delicious. They are invasive, originating in East Asia, but now growing aggressively in our forests here in eastern North America.

One thing that we can do to limit the spread of this invasive plant is to eat the fruit! Each tasty berry contains dozens of seeds that might otherwise grow into full-sized shrubs, which crowd out other plants (like our native Black Raspberry, for example).

Join us for not one, but *two* FREE wineberry foraging programs, both on Wednesday, July 8th. The first will be from 10am-11am, and the second will be 5:30-6:30pm. Learn how to identify this plant, how to safely collect the berries, and how to use it in the kitchen!

Long sleeves and sturdy shoes are recommended but not required. If you'd like to bring some berries home be sure to bring your own container!

We had a great time at our Mosquito Bucket Make&Take event last night! We learned about mosquito lifecycles, how to limit their presence in your yard, and how a mosquito bucket can help reduce mosquito populations. Participants painted their own custom mosquito buckets and walked away with a ready-to-use mosquito trap!

Missed this event and interested in making your own mosquito trap? 👀 Stay tuned for an upcoming DIY mosquito trap offering at our brand new merch table 🔜!

Tired of mosquitos BUGGING you while you're outside in your garden or working the grill? Join us next Wednesday, June 17th for a Father's Day Make & Take to learn how to make a 'Mosquito Bucket'!

While a bucket of mosquitos sounds like a pretty bad time, this is actually a mosquito trap! It lures mosquitos in to lay their eggs, then kills the larva with a targeted bacteria that won't harm birds, mammals, or beneficial insects. Unlike non-discriminatory spraying, this technique can reduce the mosquitos in your area without harming your local wildlife.

Make a gift for dad, bring him along to learn with you, or just make a bucket for yourself - no dad required to join :)

Spots are limited, so pre-registration is required. This is a paid program, $20 cash. Email CCCEC@Phila.gov or call 215-685-1900 to reserve your spot!

Happy #FreakyFriday to those who celebrate, we'd like to offer you a few freaks from our orchard for you to enjoy:

1+2. Walking Onions (Allium x proliferum)
We planted these perennial onions last fall with @phillyorchards, and we're happy to see them thriving! Instead of developing flowers at their tips like most onions, walking onion develop miniature onion bulbs or 'bulblets'. Once these develop enough they begin to weigh down the top of the plant, and when it bends over enough to touch the ground, these bulblets take root and start to grow on their own! In this way, these plants "walk" around the garden year to year.

3+4. Solomon's Seal (Polygonatum sp.)
This was a surprise volunteer in the orchard, and a very interesting one at that! This unidentified species of Solomon's Seal grows nearly 4ft high! So cool to see, and it looks so different from the rest of our usual garden flowers!

5. Devil's Dipstick or Elegant Stinkhorn (Mutinus elegans, or possibly Phallus rugulosus?)
This gnarly fungus popped up in the orchard likely thanks to all the rain we've received over the last week or two. It smells almost as gross as it looks, but very colorful and cool to see!

Join us for Orchard Tenders next Thursday, or just stop on by anytime we're open to check out what other delights you might find in the orchard!
