In honor of Native American heritage month, here are some past Native American athletes who have paved the way for our fighting tigers!

Both Greg Tarbell and Travis Solomon were members of @haudenosaunee_nationals when it was first founded back in 1983. Both Greg & Travis went from Lafayette High school, to Cobleskill, and then later transferred to Syracuse University.

Greg And Travis knew each other since they were toddlers in Onondaga. Born two weeks apart, their passions went in opposite directions. Tarbell was renowned for a shot so fierce that he could sometimes rip the net. Travis willingly used his body to keep the ball out of the cage.Their duels in practice became so harrowing that Stan Nevins, coach at Cobleskill, finally ordered Travis to put on pads when he faced Tarbell.

"He used to pull up his shirt," Tarbell said, "and he’d have bruises and contusions that looked like blood clots."

After transferring to Syracuse, Tarbell set a Syracuse record on 4/10/82 by scoring 9 goals against Bucknell, which still stands today. The record is tied with both Casey Powell and Gary Gait. Greg was Third Team All-American in 1981, and Honorable Mention in 1982 while at Syracuse.

In 1983, Travis was in goal when SU fought back from a seven-goal deficit to win the national championship by defeating Johns Hopkins. Like the rest of the Orange, his second half performance ascended to a higher level, a place where lacrosse no longer seemed to be a game.

Dan Russ was a former lacrosse player here at Cobleskill. Judy and Dan Russ used to talk about and admire the beautiful Norway spruce growing in the front yard of their East Greenbush home. Dan thought, if it kept growing, it would someday make the perfect Rockefeller Center Christmas tree. Sadly, on May 4th, 2020, Dan died at his home. Last week, Dan’s dream came true. His wife Judy donated the tree a few weeks back. The Russ family tree, from East Greenbush, now lights up Rockefeller Center. The late Dan Russ got his heavenly wish! Dan’s wife Judy, their son Liam, and several alumni were able to share this special moment. Our thoughts and prayers are always with the Russ family. 🧡 🖤

Stan Nevins

When Stan Nevins, a member of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Wrestling Hall of Fame, retired from SUNY Cobleskill in January 1991, he left behind a remarkable coaching legacy. In 22 wrestling seasons, the Nevins-led teams posted a 196-36 record without a losing season.

On the lacrosse field, he guided his squads to a 184-66 mark and four regional crowns. SUNY Cobleskill enjoyed a rapid rise to national prominence in men’s lacrosse culminating in three finishes in the national championship game (‘79, ‘80 and ‘83).

His cross country teams, which had a career 37-4 dual meet record, won numerous regional championships. Nevins was voted “Regional Coach of the Year” by his peers in lacrosse, cross country and, on 10 occasions, in wrestling. In 1976 and again in 1980, he was named the NJCAA “National Lacrosse Coach of the Year.”

Coach Nevins was honored through his inductions into both the NJCAA Lacrosse Hall-of-Fame and NJCAA Wrestling Hall-of-Fame. #CobyLax #TBT 🐅🥍 by @coby_lacrosse
