6 hours 10pm till 4am 27/02/2023 when Mother Nature went frigging berserk. Can you see some insects crawling on my lens at the end of the video🦟🤦‍♂️they were everywhere 🤪
I finally made this in Wednesday and showed a few friends who went 😱🤤😍 I was seeing so many other timelapses and photos of cloudless Aurora skies, I thought I would wait for the frenzy to die down but then I realised mine was a bit different.
so I posted it on Thursday in S.H.A.G Southern Hemisphere Aurora Group which I’m on thanks to a friend who’s an administrator. In one of the many comments was a guy from Geneva, Switzerland working for EBU News asking if this was mine and could he have my permission to use this video in his story. 😵‍💫 Oh course I said yes 🤪
I’ve included a screenshot just so you know I’m not pulling your leg 😉

Day 6
After a night in Wanaka we set off early. Our start of the Brewster Glacier hike was a VERY REFRESHING start by crossing Haast River in crocs next to Fantail Waterfall.
I’ve done this hike as a day hike so I knew there was no more creeks.
Dry feet, put on hiking boots then it’s a hike straight up steep bush then a bit of alpine tussocks on Ridgeline till we get to Brewster Hut where we had lunch. Then we set off to the glacier & pools. Then we set up a tents and four of us went exploring at the caves at the bottom of the glacier, and this is one of the caves incredibly spectacular blue ice.
We were smiling drooling going wow & OMG
Nature is the best artist

#timelapsetuesday wait wait wait till the 12th second 🔥
On Friday afternoon I’m getting messages on my phone about a big Aurora tonight yet we are under thick clouds. Jared suggested this location which I was thinking about as well.
As my IG friend Satish was down from Auckland and was keen to learn night photography, I had arranged to bring him with me plus Tony said he will be there too. Also I got a message from Messenger saying someone had messaged me, seeing it was a Vietnamese wanting to see his first Aurora and it was his last night in Christchurch. Could he come with me as he had no transport. He had seen my Aurora timelapse from the week before in a FB aurora group.
I first set up this camera doing a timelapse on top of a hill with use all in front of it. Then I join Tony and help setup Satish. Then as blue hour fades I’m setting up my second camera by taking shots to make a pano noticing the Aurora was there faintly 21:09
22:15 is the naked eye beams and we had 5 very excited little boys for about 15 minutes then aurora fades away.
When the galactic Kiwi in the Milky Way hit the horizon, there was definitely no Aurora left, so we packed up.
Son was very happy to capture his first aurora on his phone.

A rare alignment of the Milky Way’s core and a vibrant pulse of the Aurora Australis lighting up the coast at Ataahua, New Zealand.

Captured entirely on the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra using Expert RAW Astrophotography mode (short exposures) and finished up in Lightroom and Samsung Gallery. No star tracker, just pure computational magic. 🌌

Proof of just how far mobile photography has come! 📱✨

Somethings little different for #thatwanakatree at night time with a bright moon behind a thin layer of high clouds to give a halo.
No AI just an ordinary Kiwi guy in the right place at the right time that sometimes knows how to use a camera 😉🤪🤣🤩
Other good thing there wasn’t any bus loads of tourists to get in my way 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

I thought I saw a submarine

A night after Full Moon I decided to drive up on the Port Hills as there was a chance of a strong aurora. As I’m driving up I see this magical view of a bright moon above Lyttelton Harbour. Stopped for this click. The shot of the night as the Aurora was a no show anyway
Sometimes Plan B is better than plan A.
Remember to be flexible as we all know Mother Nature has her own mind.

#timelapsetuesday After hiking for the weekend, I just sat down to relax and I see a message from @jme_photography__ at 8:40pm was anyone out shooting for the Aurora tonight? After seeing some epic Aurora photos being posted at 9:15pm I decided to go and catch up with Jared and see if I see any Aurora.
Started clicking at 22:45 and stopped at 00:51 just over two hours. So happy to see the naked eye beams at midnight. I missed wave 1 but happy with wave 2
