- LGSA by EIOSでの個展「文字と円——COCO144の紙の作品、1980年代のプエルトリコ」に合わせて来日したCOCO144。滞在後半では、東北芸術工科大学での特別講義のため東京から山形へ場所を移し、講義をはじめ多くの交流の機会をもちました。 COCO144 visited Japan in conjunction with his solo exhibition, “Letters and Circles: Works on Paper by COCO144, Puerto Rico, 1980s” at LGSA by EIOS. A recap of my recent trip to Japan for the exhibition at LGSA-EIOS Library and Gallery in Shibuya, as well as talks at Tokyo University of the Arts and the Tohoku Institute of Art and Design in Yamagata. I had an incredible time sharing the history of writing culture and reflecting on the evolution of my work over the past 56 years. It was truly inspiring to connect with so many thoughtful students, artists, and supporters along the way. Presently in Tokyo to do a series of talks… I was invited by Enrico Isamu Oyama of the LGSA /EIOS (Library and Gallery of Street Art) @lgsa_by_eios @enricoisamuoyama which is showing works on paper I painted in 1985 while I lived in Puerto Rico. Enrico collected 5 works that are being exhibited at the space, and another 8 that were collected by Takatoshi Ogi @pocorizm Thank you gentlemen for making this happen, and thank you to everyone in Japan for embracing me and making me feel at home. by @coco144

Raised in Harlem, he began writing in 1969 and achieved “all-city” status by the early 1970s. During this formative period, he pioneered stencil techniques in the street, introducing precision and graphic control that marked a significant shift within the aerosol movement. As a founding member of United Graffiti Artists, he exhibited at Razor Gallery (New York, 1973), the Museum of Science and Industry (Chicago, 1974) and Artists Space (New York, 1975). - 展覧会開催のお知らせ LGSA by EIOSは、COCO144による日本初の個展「文字と円——COCO144の紙の作品、1980年代のプエルトリコ」を開催いたします。 ニューヨーク出身のCOCO144は、エアロゾル・ライティングの可能性を刷新した黎明期の中心人物のひとりです。1970年代の初頭、ステンシルの導入や塗料のドリップは、どれも新たな視覚言語でした。1972年には「United Graffiti Artists」のメンバーとして作品をギャラリーで発表します。1970年代のなかばにはアンドレア・ネッリの調査に同行し、それは研究書『Graffiti a New York』（1978年）に結実しました。 本展は、1980年代に作家がプエルトリコですごした時期に焦点を当てます。展示作品からは、ライティングの論理がより持続的なフォルムへと移行する様子がうかがえ、CとOの反復は可読性と形体性のはざまを揺れ動くようです。それは、構造・変化・連続をめぐる探究だといえます。本展は、起源と変容のあいだを往還するCOCO144の仕事を、歴史的な意義と進行形の展開という両面から捉え、日本のオーディエンスに提示します。 LGSA by EIOS is pleased to present Letters and Circles: Works on Paper by COCO144, Puerto Rico, 1980s, the first solo exhibition in Japan by COCO144 (Roberto Gualtieri). Born in New York, COCO144 is widely recognized as a foundational figure in the emergence of aerosol writing during the late 1960s and early 1970s. In this formative period, he introduced key technical and conceptual innovations that expanded the possibilities of writing, including the early use of stencils and an engagement with the expressive potential of the drip. In 1972, he exhibited as a member of United Graffiti Artists, and in the mid-1970s, he accompanied Andrea Nelli’s research, which culminated in Graffiti a New York (1978). This exhibition focuses on the period the artist spent in Puerto Rico during the 1980s. The works on view reveal a shift toward a more sustained engagement with form while remaining grounded in the logic of writing; through the repeated use of the letters C and O, his name moves between legibility and abstraction, gradually unfolding as a structured visual system.
