This painting is the first piece I completed in my current body of work titled “Threads Through Time”. This collection is Chapter One and so far there are 10 paintings completed with many more to still come. In this one there sit many layers beneath the surface…love notes, journal entries, a song, fragments of thought all evoking memories. After each piece that I write I wipe it away until only traces remain. You cannot read what was once there but I believe you can still feel their presence. The surface is built through layered tones of black and blues creating what I would call midnight so that the color never sits flat the same way as when you look at the night sky. Shredded linen was then delicately dipped into the same paint creating purposeful marks the same way that our memories leave marks within us. Each strip was made slowly,
Instinctively and imperfectly. As my thoughts shift, the pieces change with them. One fragment ends, another begins. The linen becomes a record of movement through thought, time and the different paths I have walked. For the opening show at @field_onto , Rough In, a group response to the building of a shared space and its assembly, I worked with a linen panel built directly from the language of the studio itself. The Belgian linen was generously donated by @cloth_studio From there, the process began by cutting and shredding the sides and bottom edges of the fabric, turning what was removed into the very threads I used in the work. Those fibres were then used to stitch the top edges into a folded casing to hold a steel pipe, allowing the panel to be suspended from the ceiling. The surface text “made from what remained” was pinned in cursive using yarn, then hand stitched through with Japanese sashiko thread. Steel, linen, cotton, and wool all held together through slow, repetitive making. The work hangs in the space, but it was built on the concrete floor below it, sitting directly in the gallery space where it was constructed. The final image shows that ground, imperfect, marked, and present throughout the process. All images kindly captured by @whentheyfindus by @cocoonatelier.ca

We are slowly (very slowly) moving in. We have walls and a door and keys! We have shelving and supplies and materials to build our art table. Bit by Bit. We will be officially moved in & set up for April 1. Can’t wait to be creating within these walls surrounded by community 🩶 taken in East Vancouver by @cocoonatelier.ca
