me conmueve que mi pintura sea parte de una exhibición que celebra la diáspora latina cuando mi gente sigue siendo desecrada y nuestra lucha por la liberación continúa...

I painted this seraph angel (as described in the Bible) to honor people whose lives have been cut short in their struggle for liberation & to honor the lineages of resistance that have allowed me to be more free/whole/courageous. the plural “seraphim” means “burning ones.” this angel symbolizes the fiery spirit, sacred rage, and revolutionary love that lives in all of us who resist oppression/injustice & dream of a world where all are free. I dedicate this piece to people who are most dehumanized, desecrated, demonized & targeted in their commitment to life/love/liberation.

each one of us is precious. may we all be free.

“Ecosystem of Transformative Love,” 2023. I created this visual & wrote an accompanying reflection (excerpt in slide 2) for one of my MSW classes.

“Rarely, if ever, are any of us healed in isolation. Healing is an act of communion.” - bell hooks. infinitely grateful for bell hooks & her work. ❤️‍🔥 reading All About Love: New Visions years ago was life-affirming. I believe we are beings of love. Love is not passive, but active; its work is transformative and revolutionary...may we be held in our fullness by loving relationships & communities.

Eternal Light (within & around me), 2016.

the first painting I ever created intuitively. I put all my feelings - the ones I could & could not yet name/understand - on the canvas. this was a release, a prayer, a reclamation (of my humanity & creative power), and a practice of hope. for me, this piece is a reminder that there’s divine light within & around us. that the sun will always rise. that our lives are precious & we are infinitely powerful - greater than any harmful forces (systems, societies, people, etc.) & the wounds they inflict upon us. we are loved & never alone, even (especially) in the abyss.

s/o to fellow deep feelers, intuitives, Highly Sensitive People, and anyone who is pathologized & dehumanized. you are loved wholly & not alone. our deep feeling, human responses to harm & experiencing of the full spectrum of emotion is beautiful & powerful. we are courageous/defiant in continuing to feel in a social reality that dehumanizes us, disables us, and disconnects us from ourselves, other people & all life forms…in Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s words, “I am proud to be maladjusted.”

Gracias de todo corazón to my teacher @ascottbeatty, my classmates, and the warm/welcoming community @oblate.clay for their kindness & support/knowledge sharing the past few weeks. 🥹 I’ve been wanting to co-create a relationship with clay for so long, and this experience has been a dream come true. Infinite gratitude to Ms. Rose Newton for her generosity. 🌹 Without her, this dream would not have come to pass during this season of my life.

May we all have the space/time/resources/freedom to slow down, connect with ourselves & each other, and play/explore/express/create. ❤️‍🩹

Some of the many reminders that have come up for me the past 8 weeks:

• Listen to your body-mind-spirit, and remember that your needs & abilities may differ from others’. Go at your own pace. Everyone’s journey is unique.

• You are not alone - ask for help! We need one another to lighten our load(s) - physically (clay bags are heavy lol) & spiritually/emotionally.

• Building relationships & trust (especially if someone or something is new/unfamiliar to us) takes time. Trust is built & maintained. Consistency, practice, and a strong foundation support exploration/play/flow.

• Do not force things - flow with what is aligned in each moment. Learning, growth, healing, and many things in life take time/are non-linear. Do not become discouraged by struggles/set-backs. As long as there’s life, you can keep going & try again.

• Hydrate, eat, move, and rest as needed! I know some of us need this reminder because we can get obsessive with our work (especially when energy is flowing/things want to come to life expeditiously)!

• F*ck perfectionism. All that is natural/sacred/human/more-than-human is not “perfect” (& yet, in a divine sense, its/our existence is indeed perfect). Creating/birthing/alchemizing/transmuting with our bodies/minds/spirits is miraculous, and we should honor & protect our sacred, ever-evolving processes/spaces (the womb, chrysalis, and/or kiln lol) of becoming.

• There are many ways to share our abundance with each other. May we nurture our creativity in order to identify/find/build/expand those pathways. by @cocreatingliberation

Have you ever met someone who was eerily similar to you, yet your opposite? Someone who shines light into your life & you do the same for them? This painting aimed to capture that experience…The familiarity; the feelings of being wholly seen/known; the sense of belonging; the synergy & layers of connection that transcends what is going on in the physical…Divine/magical. The healing, lessons, and growth? Infinite. On the other hand, navigating misalignment, conflict, harm, and disconnection within a dynamic like this is uniquely/profoundly painful…

Anyway, I’m infinitely grateful for every person who holds me with unconditional love, (directly or indirectly) points me to the divine, helps me heal/grow, and reminds me of my essence (love) & inherent/infinite power.

˚⋆🫧🌳📖🌻🫧˚⋆ Our sacred time in community on Sunday filled my heart with joy! Deep gratitude to @liberation.library, MAAT Bookstore, and everyone who brought this gathering to life alongside me. 🥹

Infinite gratitude to the trees for their presence/company, for providing us respite from the sun/heat, and for all they do to sustain life on Earth. Trees have been my companions during very difficult moments, including when I’ve felt alone/disconnected from most humans. My hope for this gathering was to cultivate shared moments of joy, and to remind one another that we are not alone in our struggles. We are connected with relatives of all species, and we can co-create right relationship with one another.

May we continue learning how to be loving companions to ourselves, each other, and all relatives. May we cultivate right relationship with all children, listen to/integrate their wisdom, and strengthen our practice(s) of solidarity with them. Mama Earth holds us all, and we must honor, defend, and take care of Her too.

May we all be free, and have more time to play, read, and love on this beautiful planet. ❤️‍🔥

˗ˏˋ 🪷 ˎˊ˗ “Lotus rising” now has a new home! 🥹 Infinite gratitude to Luis. 🙏🏼 It fills my heart with joy to know that his spirit connected with this lotus. I painted this piece as a reminder that we hold inherent/infinite power that allows us to “rise from the mud.”
