🙋Raise your hand if you didn’t know you could automate Slack using Python.

🙋‍♀️Now raise your hand if you want to learn about everything else you’re doing by hand that you could be automating.

🙆‍♂️I hope you’ve got at least one hand up, and that you weren’t driving.

With Python you can automate and interact with pretty much anything on your computer or on the web, and I hope this account is bringing that knowledge to more people because this is the type of thing you don’t want to keep a secret. 🫶

Let me know how you would spend a 2-day vacation in the comments, and I’ll send you the program I used for sending a Slack message automatically!

There has never been a better time to learn Python because of the introduction of AI. 🤖 Knowing how to use ChatGPT and what it gives you is extremely valuable as you can 10x your productivity with a little bit of knowledge.

⭐If you’re interested in learning Python today, comment `beginner` and I’ll send you my Intro to Python guide which walks you through installation & running your first program.

I didn’t write my first Python program until I was 27 (and it was `Hello World.py` 👋).

Because of how accessible Python is now and the insanely useful ⭐️libraries⭐️ you can import, I promise that within 2 weeks of writing your first program you will be able to code parts of your workflow or be able to analyze simple datasets in Python.

Why am I so confident? Because I started out as a Chemical Engineer and started slowly implementing Python into my workflow, and was amazed at how well this skillset complimented what I was doing on a daily basis in Excel & databases. 👩‍💻

This is exactly why I tell people you don’t have to be the smartest person ever to code, all it takes is some practice and someone to help you get started.

My biggest piece of advice is to not wait and start learning to code today. Get 1% better every day and look for small things in your current workflow to automate with Python and eventually that will build up to critical mass and you’ll soon identify yourself as someone who can code. At least that’s what happened to me 🙂

So follow me and I will show you how to implement Python in your daily life!

😅If I had known about this 5 years ago I would have saved myself literally hours of work each week.
.
BUT I'm coming back to teach you all the secrets so maybe you can incorporate this into your workflow and save some time!
.
👉Here's the full script seen in the video that reads the file 'Financial Data.xlsx' -> standardizes the column headers -> drops rows with empty 'company' field -> drops duplicates (in 'company' and 'year') -> write the results to 'financial_data.xlsx':

import pandas as pd
df = pd.read_excel('Financial Data.xlsx')
df = df.rename(columns=str.lower)
df = df.dropna(subset=['company'], how='all')
df = df.drop_duplicates(subset=['company', 'year'])
df.to_excel('financial_data.xlsx', index=False)

Use PyInstaller to extend Pythons functionality beyond your own computer📈. I use PyInstaller all the time as a way to make sure anyone can run my program on their machine.

This will generate a standalone .exe (Windows) or unix executable (Mac) dependong on which system you build it on.

You can run this on a machine, even if it doesn't have Python🥳

It also packages all imported libraries from your script into the executable (any pip install packages even!)

To use it, simply install it:

pip install pyinstaller

and then use this command to generate an executable:

pyinstaller --onefile your_program.py

Comment the word "STRINGS" below and I'll send you a custom written function that capitalizes the first letter of every sentence.
.
The Python standard library has a ton of useful functions that you can use to capitalize characters.
.
.capitalize() Capitalizes the first letter in the entire string.
.
.upper() CAPITALIZES EVERYTHING.
.
.lower() makes everything lowercase.
.
.title() Capitalizes Each Word.
.
But sometimes you've just got write custom code to do what you want!

Data is everywhere.
.
But how do you access it?
.
Scraping websites? Yes, but this takes a long time and is prone to errors.
.
Excel files? Yes, but this becomes stale quickly (outdated).
.
Databases? Absolutely, but what if it's not your database (or your companies)?
.
APIs (Application Programming Interface) solve these issues by being able to easily and quickly access other people's data.
.
The first thing you should know about APIs is that they are only available if a company or website creates one for their dataset. Not everyone wants to give you access to their data, so don't expect every website to have an API, free or not.
.
.
.
🖥️🤝🌐 What exactly is an API?
.
Think of an API as a waiter in a restaurant. You (the user) send a request (like placing an order), and the API (the waiter) fetches the data (the dish) for you.
.
For office workers, APIs can be a goldmine. Whether it's fetching financial data, getting weather forecasts, or accessing public records, APIs can automate and simplify many tasks.
