One free AI hacking tool. Seven Korean banks and lenders πŸ€―πŸ‘‡

Shinhan, KB Kookmin, Hana and four smaller lenders were hit in late September. Investigators suspect ARTEX, an open-source Chinese AI pentest tool from GitHub. You plug in your own Claude or OpenAI key, and it picks its next move based on what worked last time. Nobody has said which AI was used here.

No money was stolen. The attacker never touched the systems that move money. It went for the side ones, like sales-support and loan-inquiry pages, and copied personal data: names, phone numbers, income, loan limits. More than 65,000 people, most of them at Shinhan and one savings bank.

Regulators ordered emergency security checks at about 500 financial firms, and the president wants a full investigation.

Honestly, this needs to be a movie. I'm predicting films and TV shows about AI hacking very soon. Just wait. Screenshot this πŸ“Έ

This week in tech, in one swipe πŸ‘‡

πŸ”Έ A Claude test model sent police a fake murder tip, and the White House now says AI companies must report incidents
πŸ”Έ A report put OpenAI's revenue near $50B, not $70B, and chip stocks fell
πŸ”Έ Claude Haiku 5.5 launched 90% cheaper
πŸ”Έ Meta halved its Claude Code users and Microsoft cut its Claude bill by a third
πŸ”Έ Cloudflare bought Deno, and Deno Deploy shuts down in six months
πŸ”Έ Google's Playground turns a chat into a playable game
πŸ”Έ OpenAI started hiding a watermark inside ChatGPT's text in the EU
πŸ”Έ Nvidia is in talks to buy Reflection AI, the $25B open-model startup

Anthropic had the busiest week of all: a much cheaper Haiku, two big customers cutting back, and a fake police tip.

You can now trade GPU time like oil πŸ›’οΈπŸ‘‡

Today CME Group launched the first compute futures: contracts on the hourly rental price of Nvidia's H100 and B200 chips. Each one covers 730 GPU-hours, about a month, settled in cash. No chips change hands.

The point is to let companies lock in what they'll pay, because GPU prices swing. A median H100 hour was about $3.37 today, down from about $3.88 on average in September.

It got me thinking. We already charge for AI features per prompt or per use. If compute now has its own market price, how long before we bill customers by GPU time, like electricity?

Not financial advice.

Would you price your product by compute? πŸ€”

One year ago today, crypto had its worst day ever πŸ“‰πŸ‘‡

On 10 October 2025, Trump announced a 100% tariff on China, and about $19 billion of leveraged crypto bets were wiped out in a day. The biggest liquidation in crypto history. Bitcoin fell from $122K to under $105K that day.

Funny thing, that wasn't the top. The top was four days earlier, on 6 October, when Bitcoin closed at about $125K. But after the 10th it never even got back to $117K. It slid for almost nine months and bottomed at about $58.6K at the end of June. More than half gone.

So where are we a year later? Around $83K. Up about 40% from the bottom, but still a third below the peak.

What's interesting is that it seems we're in an uptrend now. Bitcoin has been climbing for three months, and in September it finally closed above its spring high, around $82K. Is it heading back to the all-time high? Too early to say. My guess is we'll see another pullback first.

What do you think, guys?

Numbers: Bitcoin daily prices from Yahoo Finance, as of 10 Oct 2026.
Not financial advice.

Prompting is no longer a skill. Building is πŸ‘‡

Workday's new Global Workforce Report: demand for basic AI skills like simple prompting peaked in January 2026 and has dropped 25% since. Demand for people who build AI tools, automate workflows and do AI engineering is up 51% since last September.

And the jobs? 40% of business leaders want to get more out of the people they already have. 28% expect fewer people.

Look: writing a good prompt was a 2024 skill. Now everyone can do it. The value moved to the people who build the thing around the prompt πŸ’―

Are you building with AI, or just chatting with it? πŸ€”

Since 6 October, Claude Cowork doesn't run on your laptop anymore πŸ‘‡

New Cowork tasks on Pro and Max now run in Anthropic's cloud. The "Only on your computer" setting is gone.

What it means day to day: you can hand over a task, close the laptop and it keeps going. Scheduled jobs run even when none of your devices are on.

The catch: your work now lives in your Claude account, not on your machine. If your company has rules about where code or client data can go, check them before you hand anything over.

Tasks that touch local files still need the desktop app open, and anything you started before 6 October stays on your computer until it's done.

Would you let it run your work in the cloud? πŸ€”

Google just launched Playground. You chat with it, and it builds you a playable game πŸ€―πŸ‘‡

It went live on 7 October. You describe your game, pick 2D or 3D, single player or multiplayer, then tweak the physics, rules, characters and scenery. Trivia, tower defence, racing, all from a chat.

It runs on Gemini, Nano Banana and Lyria. You can share your game by link or publish it to a public gallery with leaderboards. It's free for adults in the US, with higher limits on Google One.

And Google says Unity is coming next, for "professional-level mechanics" and high-fidelity 3D.

Back at uni, I spent 3 months building one game. Now I could probably redo it in an evening. I'm scared to think how far I could take it if I had 3 months πŸ˜…

OpenAI is now hiding a watermark inside ChatGPT's text. What exactly does this mean? πŸ‘‡

It's called textGrain. It nudges which words the model picks, so a detector with a secret key can spot the pattern, even after copy-paste.

It rolls out to ChatGPT and Codex in the EU over the coming weeks, to meet the EU AI Act. API developers anywhere can switch it on today. It's off by default.

But look: swap 10% of the words for synonyms and detection drops from 92% to 66%. And a missing watermark doesn't prove a human wrote it.

Look:

The other day, I edited a picture with ChatGPT, but I only changed the colour correction on an image. When I posted it to Instagram, it tagged it as AI content.

The content wasn't AI. The colour correction was AI. To the user, it wouldn't matter if it was Photoshop or AI.

So, students and writers: is this the end of copy-paste, or just a speed bump? πŸ€”

Europe finally has a robotics unicorn πŸ€–πŸ‘‡

Munich's RobCo just hit a $1 billion valuation. Nine months ago it was worth $500 million.

They build robots for factories and rent them out as a service, so a factory pays a subscription instead of buying the machine. Sequoia and Lightspeed are both in.

And here's the clever bit: the $1B came from a $40M share sale for employees, not a big new round. The people building the robots got to cash in first πŸ’―

Their autonomous robot Alfie launches in March 2027. The US and China own the robot headlines right now. Is Europe finally in the game, or is this a one-off? πŸ€”

Meta just cut its Claude Code users in half. Microsoft cut its Claude budget by a third πŸ‘‡

Meta went from about 60,000 Claude Code users to about 30,000 and is pushing staff to its own tools. It reportedly spent over $105 million on Claude Code in one 28-day period.

Microsoft told staff to use GitHub Copilot and OpenAI models first, and cut more than a third off a Claude bill that was heading past $1 billion a year.

So what about the free ones? GLM-5.3 from Zhipu has had open weights on Hugging Face since August. But it's 753 billion parameters. The weights are free, the GPUs to run it are not πŸ˜…

I actually know a company here in Manchester that went from Claude Code to GLM-5.3, and I'm hearing it's a bit of a struggle. But at least it's cheaper πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

Two record closes in a row for the Nasdaq πŸ“ˆπŸ‘‡

On Tuesday it added 0.45% to 27,600, right after Monday's record. The S&P 500 joined in at 7,819, its first record close since August.

Nvidia closed at a record again, $239.24, and was briefly worth $5.8 trillion during the day.

All this with the 10-year Treasury yield at 5.27%, just after touching its highest level since 2002 on Monday. Normally that cools tech stocks. AI money doesn't seem to care.

Year to date: Nasdaq +18.7%, S&P 500 +14.2%. Is the AI trade unstoppable, or is everyone ignoring the bond market? πŸ€” Not financial advice.
