PULSAR — I feel you - Social biofeedback

What happens between strangers when they can feel each other’s heartbeat and body temperature?

PULSAR is an art and research project I’m developing around heartbeat, body temperature, light and haptic feedback.

The idea: you touch a sphere. An available sphere somewhere else in the world is chosen at random and softly lights up. If someone there touches theirs, a connection begins.

You feel their heartbeat through haptic pulses and hear its rhythm. Their body temperature is reproduced at the surface of your sphere, so you can feel it against your hand. It’s also translated into light and color. They experience your signals in return.

When either of you lets go, the connection ends.

I want to explore how these sensations work together. Can they change how we perceive someone we’ve never met? What does it feel like to sense another person — and know they’re sensing you too? Does learning their name or location change the experience?

I’m interested in curiosity and closeness, but also hesitation and discomfort. Could the encounter open up conversations about empathy, our assumptions and what we share across different backgrounds? What might children, young people and adults take away from it?

And what stays with us after we let go?

These are questions to explore, not outcomes I take for granted.

Art & research project in development.
First conceived in 2020.
Images shown are concept visualizations.

Public space – part three – What if we started thinking of public spaces as places to gather again, rather than just places to pass through? This pavilion invites you to linger—a space for connection in the midst of everyday urban life. 💫

Green oases 🏝️ In addition to urban noise, there is also the noise found in today’s parks. While parks in densely populated cities provide communal spaces, they lack places of retreat. The solution lies in minimalist public retreats: small, nature-inspired spaces that offer temporary privacy and enhance relaxation in the park. Such spaces already existed in Renaissance-era parks and should be accessible to everyone. Preview generated in Midjourney. 💫
