Checking back in after 4 weeks in… Bolivia 🇧🇴

Found new lines at 6,000m, navigated political unrest, roadblocks, and high-altitude puking. Met wonderful people, pushed our limits, and spent our time getting to know a small piece of the beautiful Cordillera Real.

This is my favorite photo from last season, shot by @matthew_tufts.

It was my birthday, and with a scheduled road closure, we knew we had to be early. So, with a start in the dark, we headed out towards the line that I scoped the day before - the most aesthetic pancake stack I’d ever seen. It was a creeper - the snow was fast, and I just missed some trees on the exit, but I managed to stay on my feet. We got the shot, and booked it back home before the road closed, watching ski tourers just start their day from the trailhead. We were crushing margaritas back in town before noon. A birthday very well spent in one of my favorite places on earth. Thank you @matthew_tufts @kellynwilson @coltonfarrow.

💥Huayna Potosi - NW Ridge💥

We took the long way around the mountain—followed an aqueduct to the north side and camped below the line.

An exciting ascent alongside @matthew_tufts and @isaiahjboyle, full of mixed climbing and a beautiful, exposed ridgeline. Likely first climbed in Aug 1972 by H. Ertl and G. Shroeder.

We skied what’s believed to be a new descent, starting from the summit at 6,088m. A 900m line, with 60+ degree snow/ice steps (AD+), and requiring a couple of 15m abseils back to the bottom glacier.

ALTO - A Bolivian Ski Journey

Proud to release the trailer for our upcoming film, presented by @caltopo and @raide.research.

We set out to spend four weeks in the Cordillera Real, opening freeride descents at altitude. The experience we had, and the story we came back with, was far more complex.

Endless thanks to the support of friends and partners who made this possible, and thanks to the best team @fer_ferrandez_, @isaiahjboyle, @matthew_tufts.

Another year down, and a massive one at that. Buying land, getting engaged, designing and selling out an entire collection, and so much more. To watch you so courageously and gracefully navigate life is a constant gift. I’m so lucky to be a part of it. Squid and I love you endlessly.

Several weeks ago, @codycir @fer_ferrandez_ @matthew_tufts and @isaiahjboyle headed for Bolivia’s peaks in search of lines on the gargantuan Huayna Potosi mountain 🇧🇴

This section of the Andes holds incredible views, puckering descents and variable conditions, all of which drew the crew in… and made the adventure quite the ride. “Bolivia was raw, beautiful, and there were so many factors out of our control. It was like nothing I’ve ever seen before, especially considering the snow-line was at 16,500 ft,” said Cirillo.

💥Huayna Potosi - Pico Sur💥

~ French Direct // Bordas-Muñoz -

Our first climb and turns above 6,000m started on the globally classic (and, perhaps, globally notorious for bad snow conditions) “French Direct”—the stunning 50+ degree panel of Huayna Potosi’s Pico Sur.

We were able to ski straight off the summit of Pico Sur above the French Direct, an extraordinary gift from the Cordillera to start our trip. The face’s snow was punchy and variable (as expected via the booter up), but joyfully skiable nonetheless.

@fer_ferrandez_ opened up a potentially new descent to skier’s left, linking an exposed traverse off the summit into the infrequently climbed “Bordas - Muñoz” (González, Hevia, Rey, Vázquez, 1990).

💥Huayna Potosi - West Face💥

Following a late-May storm, we climbed the 900m face bottom-up, linking a combination of the “American Route” (Harthorne, Harvard, Janney, Thompson - 1970) and “French Route” (J. & M. Affanasief - 1978) ascents through the complex behemoth of bergschrunds, seracs, and cliffs.

We reached the skiable high point of about 90m below the summit (~6,000m), where ice runnels formed. We transitioned and skied the sustained 55-degree upper pitches in truly horrendous crust and ice; the snow softened a bit halfway down the face, but remained difficult and variable throughout.

There’s a lot of debate around first descents, skiable high points, and top-down vs. ground-up style. If the goal is to ski, do summits matter? Is there a difference between climbing to a skiable high point vs. rappeling down toward it? Hopefully one day someone gets the exceptional, unicorn conditions needed to ski it straight from the top— it’d be epic.

For now, we’re grateful to be down safe and for the shared experience with the mountain and each other in this alpine amphitheater.

Khüiten East Face — Mongolia

Proud of this one. A very committing 600m, 55+ degree wall on the border of China.

It had been a long time since I felt good or happy with my skiing, but in this moment, it finally felt like the years of far off adventures and freeriding all came together. A small moment, but some alignment in myself, what I had been pursuing, and the style in which I wanted to do it.

Only possible because of the support of the team while in Mongolia and back at home. Grateful is an understatement.

This fall, @kellynwilson and I had the pleasure of heading to @elevenexperience Deplar Farm. I hadn’t been back to Iceland since the bike-to-ski around the island in spring 24’, so this was quite the upgrade from the usual roadside tent.

We watched the northern lights dance from the property, awed at whale sightings, sauna-ritualed, had cod-liver oil for breakfast, surfed (technically), and drove past myriad lines and couloirs I’d skied before.   The Troll Peninsula is a special, special place. If I’ve talked to you in the past few weeks, then you know that I cannot stop singing Austria’s praises. I loved every single second of being in this beautiful country. While there, I was introduced to the Austrian term Lebensgefühl- the unhurried joy of existing. And life in the Austria Alps embodies that so well. Every meal, every conversation, and every ski run in the Arlberg seemed to be more joyful than the last. I genuinely can’t thank the kind people I met along the way enough for the best inaugural (but certainly not the last) trip to Austria.
