If you know of an alumnus or school/agency partner who embodies the qualities of the Distinguished Alumni Impact Award, Vincentian Partnership Excellence Award, and/or Early Career Alumni Achievement Award, please nominate them for our 2026 College of Education Awards.

Congratulations, Prof. Ronald Chennault, on the pending publication of your new book!

Consider this: Restrictions placed by state legislatures on what schools can teach about America's history of conquest and enslavement. Broad bans enacted by local school boards that remove meaningful books from school curricula and the shelves of libraries. Court rulings that muddy the distinction between what counts as private versus public expressions of religion in public school settings and that open the door to publicly funded religious education. All of these recent actions chip away at the foundation of public education in America. But how did we get here? Decades of elite public discourse (talk and text) about public education helped to bring us to this point. Much of this conversation is anti-public. It includes statements by major elected officials, education advocacy organizations, journalists in mainstream press outlets, and other influential actors. Chennault casts light on the cultural and political processes at work and challenges the unquestioned assumptions beneath the surface of this discourse, with the hopes that we can transform and strengthen public education.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE ELECTION FOR A CHICAGO SCHOOL BOARD!

Please note that our fall Education Issues Forum will be held virtually and livestreamed from 5:30-7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 20 and will discuss why the Chicago School Board election on November 3 is so important, what the school board actually does and how parents, teachers, community members can participate. We’ll offer the nuts and bolts of how to find the candidates in your district, learn about their backgrounds and positions on issues that you consider important for your schools. We’ll also look at some of the broader issues surrounding elections and democracy: the role of funding in politics, issues of equity and access, and how to develop broad community knowledge and participation.

The event is open to all and free to attend, but registration is required.

On Civic Education: A Conversation with Professor Hilary Conklin

Professor Hilary Conklin, whose research focuses on civic education, most recently served as chair of Teacher Education, Kinesiology, and Educational Studies, stepping down for Fall 2026 to focus on her research in civic education. The College of Education recently talked with Prof. Conklin about her work in the field and in the classroom and why civic education is so essential to students growing up to living in a democracy.

Flat DIBS is heading back to school! 📚🍎

Ana Tapia (COE '13) brought Flat DIBS to her Indianapolis classroom as she welcomed students for a new school year. As an educator, Ana says her time at DePaul helped shape the teacher she is today.

"My time at DePaul helped shape me into the educator I am today. I am especially thankful to have had the opportunity to meet Professor Tavano, who made my time at DePaul even more meaningful."
