Last month, @mpacker49 had the pleasure of presenting “From Access to Industry: Expanding Pathways to Arts, Entertainment & Design Credentials” at the Council for Opportunity in Education conference in San Diego alongside Heath Alexander from @studysmart_us

We explored how TRIO programs can connect students’ creative interests to college and career opportunities through hands-on learning, industry mentorship, portfolios, and meaningful credentials.

A key takeaway: students need opportunities to demonstrate what they can do. A film, design project, or music production can become evidence of their skills, and a starting point for their next step.

Thank you to @coeworks and everyone who joined us. We’re excited to continue working with TRIO program leaders to expand access to careers in arts, entertainment, and design! taken in San Diego, California by @coeworks

📸 Day Three of #COEAC2026 was packed with learning, celebration, and a little friendly competition!

We started the morning with a scenic Sunrise Walk along the San Diego Bay before hearing a COE Update from President Kimberly Jones. The day continued with concurrent sessions and Hot Topics exploring some of the issues shaping our work.

We also celebrated the recipients of the Walter O. Mason and First-Generation College Celebration Day Awards during a special luncheon recognizing their impact and commitment to educational opportunity.

Then, attendees put their skills to the test during “TRIO Champions Commence: 60 Seconds to Glory,” a series of fun, fast-paced challenges!

From strengthening programs to exploring what’s next for TRIO, Day Three gave us plenty to take back to our campuses and communities.

📸 Day Two of #COEAC2026 gave us plenty to celebrate!

We started the morning with yoga before coming together for our plenary session, “Education as the Engine of Economic Mobility,” sponsored by College Board.

One of the highlights of the day was the 2026 National TRIO Achievers Awards Dinner, hosted by John Quiñones, a proud TRIO Upward Bound alumnus. Together, we celebrated this year’s National TRIO Achievers and the incredible journeys and accomplishments that brought them to this moment.

We capped off another incredible day with music, dancing, and plenty of annual conference energy!

Check out some of our favorite moments from day two, and stay tuned for more from San Diego.

📸 Take a look at some highlights from Day One of hashtag#COEAC2026! We kicked things off in San Diego with an inspiring opening session featuring Stephanie Land, bestselling author of Maid, which was adapted into the acclaimed Netflix series.

Attendees also enjoyed a special performance by San Diego-based dance troupe Danza Azteca Tlayolohtli. We welcomed first-time attendees with a sports-themed Newcomers Reception, then turned up the energy with karaoke!

A special thank you to our sponsors for helping make Day One possible.

And we’re just getting started. Stay tuned for more from San Diego!

The first slate of FY 2026 TRIO Talent Search and Educational Opportunity Centers (EOC) grant awards is here.

COE congratulates the programs that received successful news and will continue opening doors to college, careers, and economic opportunity for students, families, and adult learners across the country. 🎉

We also recognize that this is a bittersweet moment for the TRIO community. While hundreds of programs will continue their vital work, the Education Department’s restructured competitions have so far resulted in fewer grants being funded—and some programs and communities are still awaiting answers.

If your program is not on the first slate, COE is with you. We will continue providing guidance as the Department releases additional notifications and as we learn more about the funding band and next steps.

To every TRIO professional, student, alum, family member, institution, and advocate who raised their voice over these past several months: your advocacy mattered. Hundreds of programs will continue serving their communities because TRIO stood together.

We celebrate those moving forward. We stand beside those still waiting. And we will keep fighting for every student and community that depends on TRIO.

America has expanded higher education opportunity, but the gains have not been shared equally.

🔹 College costs have risen 2.5× since 1974.
🔹 Low-income students face nearly $20,000 in unmet need.
🔹 The U.S. trails the OECD average for first-generation attainment.
🔹 College can cost low-income families MORE than their annual income.

The 2026 Indicators of Higher Education Equity in the United States is now available from the Pell Institute.
If you care about economic mobility, college access, workforce competitiveness, or the future of this country—read this report.

✨ Congratulations to Bill Flanigan, newly elected to the West Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals! ✨

An Upward Bound alumnus from Salem University, Bill’s journey is a powerful reminder that when opportunity meets determination, leadership follows. From TRIO student to Justice-elect, his path reflects the transformative power of educational access and the impact of programs that inspire students to dream bigger.

We’re proud to celebrate his achievement and the lasting impact of TRIO in shaping leaders who uplift their communities and expand opportunity for others.

Dear TRIO Community,

I want to personally thank each of you for the extraordinary advocacy you demonstrated during our National TRIO Week of Action.

Because of your leadership, your urgency, and your commitment, COE logged more than 1,000 advocacy calls to Congress from across the country. We know that the reported number represents only a slice of the true volume of outreach for first-generation and low-income students. What matters most is this: every state and territory showed up. Every corner of the TRIO community took action to #ProtectTRIO. Every voice contributed to a unified national message.

In a moment when the future of TRIO is being actively debated and challenged, your advocacy made one thing unmistakably clear: this community will not be silent when opportunity is on the line.

Thank you to every TRIO professional, student, alumnus, parent, and supporter who picked up the phone, sent a message, or shared your story.

Your efforts are shaping this conversation in real time. I encourage you to keep making calls and to log your outreach using COE's Congressional Outreach Tracker so we can continue demonstrating the full strength of this movement.

Also, please plan to join us for our next National TRIO Community Townhall on Tuesday, May 5, at 5:00 p.m. ET. This will be a critical opportunity to align as a community, hear the latest updates, and prepare for the next phase of this work.

We are strongest when we move together. What you showed this week is exactly what it means to live out one mission, one voice, and one TRIO. #TRIOWorks

Sincerely,

Kimberly Jones
