Why did Graham Platner appeal to so many ostensible leftists and working class Mainers? I think saying it’s racism or misogyny is not quite right. Too cynical and hopeless. Instead, I think Platner, with his raw, front-facing confessions of his sins put us in the position of a priest. Platner, instead of denying or doing the corporate dem meaningless word salad, was saying he was wrong and was asking for forgiveness and promised to redeem himself through electoral politics while we were on the receiving end of his apology and were given the power to grant him grace. But we are not priests. We are Americans. The blood is on our hands. Platner is just a mirror. He is the avatar of our guilt, of our sins. If a man who was a soldier in a criminal war, a man who was an abusive drunk toward women, a man who served the mercenary machine and fed it blood can be redeemed, then maybe there is hope for us all. I didn’t use to believe in ghosts, but I’m not sure how else to explain the world we live in today. We are haunted by the cursed actions of our ruling elite. And until we reckon with our ghosts we will be weighed down by their constant presence a every day will be 9/11 like some kind of gruesome Groundhog Day. You’ll see the ghosts everywhere you look. In ICE detention facilities, in Palestine, in a girl’s school in Iran. I’m afraid that the way we treat 9/11 will be the same way we treat Palestine in a few short years. by @coexist.inc
