Todd has been busy! We’re celebrating Dr. Todd LeVasseur and the three recent publications showcasing his work across environmental studies, language, and sustainability. 📚

One publication in Ethics and the Environment holds a special place: “The Power of Ideas: An Ecofeminist Conversation with Patsy Hallen.” If you’ve had class with Todd, you’ve probably encountered units and readings on ecofeminism and gender and the environment, which means you’re in a lineage of his learning about these topics, going back to a postgraduate semester at Murdoch University in Perth, Western Australia, in 2001. As lead organizer and co-author of this publication, Todd helped bring together a retrospective honoring Dr. Patsy Hallen, a pioneering Australian ecofeminist scholar who mentored Todd during his studies at Murdoch University. Nearly 25 years later, this work celebrates Dr. Hallen’s lasting influence on generations of scholar-activists and the ideas that continue to shape environmental thought and education. Shared here are some photos Todd shared from his 2023 return visit to Singapore, when he and others featured in the article hosted a celebration of Patsy’s career back at Murdoch University.

Todd’s two other recent publications highlight his interdisciplinary approach to environmental scholarship:

📖 “Ecolinguistics in the United States,” published in the Journal of World Languages, explores the field of ecolinguistics and its development in the United States.

🌎 “What Goes In, Must Come Out: Practice Metabolism and the Thermodynamic Limits of Urbanization,” published in Energy Research & Social Science, examines how everyday practices, resource consumption, and energy flows shape urban life and its environmental impacts.

Congratulations to Todd on these contributions to environmental scholarship! 🎉

We are delighted to invite you to the premiere of the short documentary, Wind Birds, directed and produced by Joel Caldwell, at the Charleston Library Society on Thursday, October 15, with our friends from the MARSH Project and Coastal Expeditions Foundation!

This film depicts what makes our coastline an incredible place for birds to call home, nest, and stop over during migration, and the challenges these near-shore and wild islands face from overdevelopment, habitat loss, and sea-level rise.

We look forward to the debut of the short film Wind Birds, along with Black Rail’s Tale. This powerful duo focuses on culture and conservation and acts as an influential way to approach conservation. A panel discussion after the films will be held with J. Drew Lanham, author, poet, and one of the most prominent ornithologists in America, Director and Producer Joel Caldwell, Captain Chris Crolley of Coastal Expeditions and mayor of Awendaw, along with the Founder of Coastal Conservation League, Dana Beach, for a deep discussion about the essential value of South Carolina’s five breeding islands and the critical importance of our bird habitats.

You can get your tickets using the link in our bio. See you there! A flock of birds flies over the sea. Text overlay reads: birds and their santuaries. A debut film screening. October 15 at 6 p.m. at the Charleston Library Society. 164 King Street. by @cofc_envsprogram
