☕ Turning coffee waste into biochar
♻️ Recovering spent grounds + chaff
🌱 Circular.
👇 Give coffee waste a better ending, SCG second chance
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
☕ From puck to pellet to biochar.

Spent coffee grounds (SCG) have attracted substantial research. A 2025 review by Dari and colleagues examined 403 papers on ways to put them to use. But turning wet grounds from cafés into a consistent, useful material remains a practical challenge.

Here’s what we’re testing at CoffeeCycle:

☕ Collect spent grounds from Dublin cafés and roasters, while tracking how quickly they need to be handled.

⚙️ Dry and pelletise the grounds to create a denser feedstock that’s easier to store and process.

🔥 Pyrolyse the pellets into biochar, then measure its yield and properties.

The progression: grounds → pellets → char.

💧 One research direction we’re particularly interested in is removing microplastics from water. Published studies have tested SCG biochar as a filtration material, but we haven’t tested CoffeeCycle’s char for that use yet.

We’re developing a way to stabilise wet grounds so they can be stored and processed for longer. We’ll measure whether it works, alongside char yield, quality and the climate balance across the full process.

Thanks to everyone who has shared ideas and feedback so far. If you research SCG, biochar or urban waste streams, or run a café or roastery in Dublin, we’d like to talk. 🤝

Doing the same thing over and over again is no longer an option.

♻️ Carbon-market data is becoming easier to compare, exchange and trace.

The Carbon Data Open Protocol (CDOP) has officially released Version 2.0 of its open-source data schema.

Supported by more than 75 member organisations, CDOP has expanded its coverage from four foundational categories to 11 categories spanning more of the carbon-credit lifecycle.

The seven new categories are:

• Co-benefits
• Durability and permanence
• Unit description
• Crediting period
• Estimations
• Labels and certifications
• Project finance

Version 2.0 also introduces three important technical changes:

• A standardised entity model connecting projects, stakeholders, registries and issuances.

• A forward-compatible structure designed to accommodate future changes without repeatedly disrupting existing integrations.

• An auditable status history replacing the previous single, overwritable status field.

That final change is particularly significant.

When a project or credit undergoes a correction or rating update, the earlier status no longer has to disappear through an overwrite. The change can remain visible as part of a traceable history.

Why does this matter?

Project developers, registries, platforms, rating providers and buyers currently spend considerable time cleaning and reconciling incompatible data. A shared structure can make that information more consistent, comparable and easier to exchange.

CDOP does not certify projects, verify climate claims or automatically create carbon credits. It standardises how information about projects and credits can be structured and shared.

That distinction matters: standardised data is not proof of integrity—but preserving a credit’s history makes integrity easier to examine.

Highlighting: "Who paid to develop the project, who carries the financial risk, and who ultimately receives the revenue?"

Biochar isn’t new. What’s new is our ability to measure, engineer and scale it. 🌍🔥

For centuries, people have used charred organic material in ways that influenced soils and land management. One of the best-known examples is Terra Preta, the exceptionally fertile, carbon-rich dark earth found in parts of the Amazon and associated with Indigenous land-management practices. 🌱

Over time, observation became science. 🔬

Researchers began studying how charcoal-rich materials interact with soil, nutrients, water and carbon. By the early 2000s, the term biochar became widely used for biomass-derived char deliberately produced for beneficial environmental applications.

Today, biochar is being explored across:

🌱 Soil and growing media
💧 Water and filtration applications
♻️ Circular materials
🌾 Agriculture
🔥 Waste-to-value processing
🌍 Durable carbon storage

And under a microscope, biochar reveals another part of the story.

Its structure contains a complex network of pores, cavities and channels, creating a surprisingly large internal surface area. That microscopic structure helps explain why biochar can interact with water, nutrients and microorganisms.

At CoffeeCycle, we’re exploring what happens when this long-established principle is applied to a modern waste stream:

☕ Working with Kefircoffee to convert spent coffee grounds → preparation → controlled pyrolysis → SCG-derived biochar

The material may be ancient in principle.

The science is modern.

And the opportunity is circular. ♻️

Recover the grounds. Transform the material. Return value to the cycle.

☕ Same coffee. Same grounds. Two endings.

Every espresso ends up in much the same place — a puck of spent coffee grounds.

What happens next is a choice.

🗑️ One ending: the grounds enter the waste stream. When organic material reaches landfill and breaks down under low-oxygen conditions, it can contribute to methane emissions — a climate cost from something most of us rarely think about twice.

♻️ The other ending: the cycle.

At CoffeeCycle, we’re exploring how those same spent coffee grounds can be recovered, prepared and processed through controlled pyrolysis.

What remains is biochar, a stable, carbon-rich material with the potential to keep carbon in a more durable form and return value to the soil. 🌱

Same grounds. A better ending.

We’re deliberately early, and we’re open about it.

CoffeeCycle is an active pilot. We’re still testing the practical realities of collection, storage, moisture, preparation, processing and what it takes to make the whole loop work before scaling.

We’d rather show a developing idea honestly than oversell one.

☕ Recover the grounds.

♻️ Transform the material.

🌱 Return value to the cycle.

The last thing coffee should be is waste. Working with partners like Kefircoffee were making progress👏

In the future, every coffee shop will want this on their windows and doors. ☕️♻️

That badge on the glass means one thing: the spent grounds behind your morning flat white didn't end up as waste. They're recovered and turned into biochar — a stable, carbon-rich material that locks that carbon into Irish soil for the long term instead of letting it leak back into the atmosphere as methane. 🌱🔥

We're building the loop starting in Dublin, one coffee shop at a time. And we're honest that we're early — a working proof-of-concept, not a glossy promise.

The last thing coffee should be is waste.

Run a coffee shop or roastery? Let's close the loop on your grounds. 👉 Visit: https://coffeecycle.ie/biochar/

🌱 Every cup of coffee begins with a seed, growing into a plant and eventually a ripe coffee cherry. 🍒☕

The cherry is processed, the bean is dried, roasted 🔥 and prepared for brewing.

Then comes the familiar ritual. Grind it. Brew it. Enjoy it. ☕✨

But once the coffee is made, its story doesn’t have to end. ♻️ CoffeeCycle recovers spent coffee grounds and explores their transformation through controlled pyrolysis into carbon-rich biochar 🌱, turning what was once a disposal stream into a material with a useful second life.

🏪 Participating coffee shops can display their CoffeeCycle Partner decal in the window, showing customers that their spent coffee grounds are being recycled. ♻️☕

☕️CoffeeCycle is developing an Irish circular-economy platform to give spent coffee grounds a second life instead of treating them simply as waste.♻️

“Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result is the first sign of insanity.”

For decades, the routine has been largely the same: make the coffee, discard the grounds, repeat. CoffeeCycle is working to create a better ending” or “is demonstrating that there can be a better ending

🌱Why are we doing it? Because spent coffee grounds are generated every day by cafés, roasters, offices and hospitality businesses, yet much of this material is still treated as a disposal stream. We believe those grounds should instead serve as a recoverable resource, particularly where poor organic-waste management can contribute to methane emissions.🫘➡️🔥➡️🌱

CoffeeCycle recovers the grounds, prepares and pelletises them for controlled processing, and uses pyrolysis to convert them into carbon-rich biochar and potentially other useful circular materials.☕️➡️🗑️

This is about finding out what works in the real world: separation at source, storage, collection frequency, moisture, contamination, processing yield and overall viability. We want to measure first, learn from the evidence, and then scale what works.

🔄Recover the grounds. Transform the material. Return value to the cycle.

The last thing coffee should be is waste.☕️♻️ by @coffeecycleie
