What happens when an Emergency Stop button is pressed while a machine is running? 🛑⚙️

This video gives a simple visual explanation of how a PLC and Safety Relay respond when a safety function is triggered.

The PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) manages the normal operation of the machine by reading inputs, processing the programmed logic, and controlling outputs. The Safety Relay monitors safety-related devices such as Emergency Stops and safety switches. When the E-Stop is pressed, the Safety Relay detects the change in the safety circuit and switches its safety outputs OFF, helping bring the machine to its designed safe state.

Ever wondered what’s actually happening inside a VFD when a motor changes speed? ⚙️

A VFD doesn’t simply lower the voltage. It converts incoming AC to DC, then uses its inverter stage to produce a controlled variable-frequency output for the motor.

By adjusting the output frequency—and managing voltage and current according to the control method—the VFD gives much more precise control over how an induction motor operates.

Understanding this basic principle makes it much easier to understand motor control in industrial automation.

They both switch circuits… so what’s the actual difference between a Relay and a Contactor?⚡🤔

At first, they may seem similar. Both commonly use an electromagnetic coil to operate contacts and control another electrical circuit.

But they’re designed for different switching duties.

⚙️ Contactor
A contactor is designed for frequent switching of higher-power loads. You’ll commonly find contactors controlling:
• Industrial motors
• Heaters
• Pumps
• Compressors
• Other higher-power industrial loads

🔌 Relay
A relay is commonly used for:
• Control circuits
• Signal interfacing
• Electrical isolation
• Lower-power switching

So, can a relay switch a motor? Depending on the motor and the relay’s ratings, it can in some applications. But for demanding and frequent motor switching, a properly rated contactor is typically the right choice.

The easiest way to remember it:

Similar switching principle. Different design, ratings and applications.
