Struggling to get your doctor to understand your POTS symptoms? Try speaking their language.
SBAR is a communication tool used in healthcare to help organize information clearly: Situation, Background, Assessment, and Recommendation. It can help you explain what you’re experiencing, share relevant medical history, describe how your symptoms affect daily life, and communicate what you need from your provider.
When you’re living with POTS (Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome), finding the right words can make a difference. Save this for your next doctor’s appointment!

POTS vs. Anxiety: Understanding the Difference | POTS Episode 6
Is it anxiety, or could it be POTS? Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS) is a form of dysautonomia that affects the autonomic nervous system and can cause symptoms such as a rapid heart rate, dizziness, lightheadedness, fatigue, shortness of breath, and brain fog.
Because POTS and anxiety can share similar symptoms, people living with POTS are sometimes told their symptoms are caused by anxiety. But POTS is a real medical condition, and its symptoms deserve to be taken seriously.
In Episode 6, we discuss the difference between POTS symptoms and anxiety, why POTS symptoms aren’t always limited to standing, and why symptoms that continue while sitting or lying down shouldn’t automatically be dismissed as anxiety.
If you’re living with POTS, suspect you may have POTS, or are trying to understand the connection between anxiety and dysautonomia, this episode is for you.
At Cognitive FX, we help people with complex symptoms find answers and better understand what they’re experiencing.
Topics covered:
    •    POTS vs. anxiety symptoms
    •    Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS)
    •    Dysautonomia and the autonomic nervous system
    •    POTS symptoms while lying down
    •    Rapid heart rate, dizziness, and brain fog
    •    Why POTS can be mistaken for anxiety
    •    Understanding and communicating chronic illness symptoms

How do you explain POTS to your doctor?

It’s not just about listing your symptoms—it’s about explaining how those symptoms actually affect your daily life. What can’t you do? What has changed? What does a bad POTS day actually feel like?

In Episode 5, we’re talking about how to describe your POTS symptoms so your doctor can better understand what you’re experiencing.

When symptoms involve multiple body systems, it can sometimes be difficult to get the conversation focused on what is actually happening physically. Patients may feel dismissed, misunderstood, or even have their symptoms attributed to a mental health issue before other possibilities have been fully explored.

One of the best ways to prepare is to know your top three symptoms before you walk into the appointment.
What are the three symptoms affecting your life the most? When did they start? What makes them better or worse? Being organized can help you communicate clearly and make the most of your limited time with your doctor.
Your symptoms deserve to be heard—and being prepared can help you advocate for yourself.
